A pro LF photograher that I knew said that he always arrived the day before a shoot to scope out shots and lighting.
Anything otherwise is high risk... of getting little or nothing.

I don't understand why Drew needs to tell you that it will be cold out West, in mid-late December.
If you're not ready for below freezing weather, please don't come.
But if this discussion is...
If you really want to concentrate on photography, I would think about the Four Corners area.
Monument Valley, Arches, Shiprock, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Grand Canyon, Goose Necks, Bandelier for...
I would recommend an Easy-up or comparable. They can be set high enough to stand up in, and you can nail them to the ground (10 penny nails work well). You can get sides as well. I'm sure you've...
Sounds like Ft Ebey State Park. Lots of trails, deep woods, and a nice stretch of beach.
"Where the heck were we?"
Yum, Yum. Sign of the times: People are lining up to eat road kill in Montana. State is issuing permits!
from the Montana Standard:
"State wildlife officials said they weren't sure how much...
I agree with Mark. I've used a Nagaoka for backpacking and it did everything that I needed in a very light package.
I did the trip in March one year, and we were turned around by a blizzard. We got horribly sick as well.
Please post photos if they came out OK!
Mr Ingolfsson will be a valuable resource for you!
I was there in April a few years ago, to drive the Ring Road all the way around, clockwise from Reykjavik (10 days driving).
Getting to Akureyi...
Ah, the big environmentalist comes out in favor of using precious metals and timber products.
I used a Slik Sprint Pro tripod (2 lbs, $90) on a few backpacking trips with a light Nagaoka view camera. I stop short of a full recommendation, but it might work in some cases where saving weight...
To paraphrase a great mountaineer, Alex Lowe, who certainly was IMO the best of his generation,
"the best (insert occupation) is the one having the most fun".
using that definition, I think...
I casually showed some prints to an aunt who has had a number of successful fine art shows of her oils and mixed-media works. She enthusiastically urged me to phone this and that gallery and talk to...
I did a double exposure of water near a ferry dock that came out (I thought) quite spectacular, with a shimmering effect to the water that I really liked. I printed a 11x17 and entered it in a local...
As a registered field geologist, I'm not skeptical about plate tectonics, but I think it's an oversimplification. The theory concentrates on the ocean basins and continental margins, and pretty much...
I backpacked on the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah NP for 3 days with a very light LF outfit. It's possible, especially if you take a minimal tripod. I had planned to carry the LF gear further (30...
Is delivery confirmation available on US Mail packages sent outside the US?
I don't think so.
I sold some books to people in Europe and the PO told me they could not confirm delivery. ...
$120 but I had to do a complete restoration including refinishing the wood and making a new bellows.
It's a really nice camera now.
Jeff
I bought a Thornton Pickard Ruby half plate field camera a few years ago for about $125. Nice wood and admirable craftsmanship for 110 years ago.
The clueless seller called it a 5x7 view...
I'm back from the trip. We did the miles as scheduled, 500 in 27 days. Not bad for old guys on a tough trail, climbing up and down mountains all day.
I carried the 4x5 kit for the first 4 days in...
Hey, sounds good. I shot 6 4x5 sheets of Efke IR today, testing for exposure. It's got to be one of the slowest films I've ever used (EI about 1 according to my tests), so perhaps that helps out...
It's all about living life to the fullest. Do whatever works for you, but get out there!
In my case a friend asked me to join him, hiking to Trail Days in Damascus, VA. Long days, adding up to...
I bought one with a wrinkle (probably from folding up improperly), which was not a problem although I ordered a new bellows on eBay and changed it easily in less than an hour.
Thanks for sharing, Vaughn.
And I wish you hadn't said that about the Rolleiflex. It is pulling me so much in that direction! A bit heavier than the 4x5 (2 lb 11 oz for my 2.8C) but much less...
Yes, it's the Wild West in some foreign countries.
I recall that I was required to get a full chest X-Ray done to work in my field (geology) in an African Country. At the 1950's era-like hospital...
Yes, quite expensive. A bagel with cream cheese in downtown Reykjavik is $12. But there are other options. We brought our own food and didn't eat out at all. We also stayed in campgrounds. The...
The Needles highway comes to mind for B&W rocks and views.
If you are a hiker, Harney Peak is a moderate hike from Sylvan Lake. Good views from the old stone lookout tower, and often some mtn goats...
Oh I should have added that on both trips to Iceland there were days of really bad wet weather. Like 33 degrees and 40+ mph winds (in August). We also traveled there in April/May and had to deal...
Yes, the public and even a lot of hikers seem unable to visualize the terrain based on topographic lines. Once you develop the skill it's almost as good as a "fly over". But without the skill, map...
The Laugeveggur (hot springs) hiking region a few hours east of Reyk is extremely beautiful. You can get there on the bus, spend the day hiking/photographing, then return. We also enjoyed...

I was afraid this thread would change to a gear thread... Well, OK then, hey I might learn something. If anyone is interested in my gear list, with weights, I will post it.
Bill, I'm sure the...
Perhaps more important than getting from point A to point B is finding yourself with map & compass when you are lost.
For this, it's important to have a sightable compass, map, and drawing...
Thanks for your thoughts. I knew there were some other LF backpackers and enthusiasts out there.
Anything can happen. Physically I've done this sort of thing many times before (career as a field...
I'm backpacking about 400 miles from Shenandoah NP (Thornton Gap) to Damascus, VA, starting in mid-April. I'm starting out with a light (2.6 lb) Nagaoka 4x5 field camera rig, totaling 8 lbs...
I'm disappointed with the darkroom concocted landscapes that are presented as actual landscapes, sort of like a taxidermist trying to fool you into believing that that a jackalope (a jack rabbit with...
Landscapes, old Americana, trees, roots, rocks ...
I have a lot of nice lenses, but here's what I'm putting together for backpacking 4x5 for four weeks in April/May (Appalachian Trail, Virginia). ...
Tandy leather had what I needed for replacing the handle on an old Eastman View 5x7.
Looks, works great.
I had a similar experience.
There's ample chances for photos here, and there are a few sunny parts of days this time of year. But generally it is pretty low light whereever you go, and the days are short.
The bad drivers are...
