Ben - Quick question, and forgive me if this has been asked. I don't have time to read all 84 pages. With the 65mm travelwide, you've stated the fixed focus is about 8 meters (26'), and I'm wondering...

The Toyo 3.6x Loupe is an inexpensive long-barrel loupe and I'm happy with mine.
John -
I've done some architectural work in NYC and my only comment would be regarding wide lenses if you are doing any interior work. I have used a 65mm older Super Angulon for interiors because...
I'll echo others here with type 55 & 52, Kodak Ektalure and technical pan. PRT100 also.
I use a 210mm Schneider f9 G-claron. Small, light and tack sharp. Not terribly bright at f9, and I think it is only single-coated. But very reasonable at around $300 on eBay.
And it doesn't seem like the right device to have a camera within, but mount this thing on a stand next to your digital studio camera, or with a Bluetooth remote and it could be an amazing preview...
I'm an architect and photographer. Will be using it as a portfolio - in fact, after my first pitch with it last week, I think it has already paid for itself. And I no longer need to fuss with...
I shoot Chamonix 8x10 and think the 4x5 Chams are great, but use a Toyo 45A II (about $700 on bay). Great cameras, the Chams and Toyo 4x5s.
I think the original discussion here about Chamonix levels came out of a conversation between Brian Ulrich and myself regarding the imprecision of levels on our 8x10 Chamonix cameras. When initially...
Just a note - I am using my iPad to view the forums and the browser defaults to the mobile device version, which is a little clumsy on the iPad. If possible, it would be great to have an option to...
The hinged back is interesting. Does that support a film holder or a plate? Would like to see a pic of the back with the hinged glass raised.
A few things which deserve to be cleared up:
You likely won't be happy with prints bigger than 40x50 from 8x10 negs scanned on an epson v700 or v750. The scanner just can't deliver the sharpness...
I'm looking for some options for shipping framed artwork to galleries/museums. I have used Airfloat Systems strongboxes in the past and have been happy with them. Does anyone have other...
Folded Chamonix 8x10 model 810WWA-c is 4.5 x 12.75 x 13.25" (knobs on 13.25 dimension protrude to 14"). Weighs just over 8#.
I recently looked at bags and bought a Think Tank Photo bag for my 4x5. I use a backpack for the Chamonix 8x10, but I liked some of Think Tank's shoulder and airport bags and think they would work...
For c41 there is a big difference between 4x5 and 8x10. If you're shooting 8x10, I think there are only a few US labs consistently doing proper work (i.e., not ruining your negs). Lightwaves in SF is...
I'm not sure that the photographers you mention have your said intentions in mind.
It's not that mankind is a blight... I think (in the late 70's) it was more about turning the camera somewhere...
Brian - you know I like 'em. Congrats on the Time slideshow. Keep us posted on when they'll be in galleries/museums. Can't wait to see them all large.
Received these today, Jim. Thanks for your work - they look great.
I like this thread. Great work here.

Or just a high quality webcam built into the back of the lensboard, wirelessly transmitting to laptop. Not as cool as my dream, though.
... unless said laptop was a screen that replaced the gg...
Matt - (checked your website, digging your work) I was a student 10 years ago, and I try to always think of myself as a student. That's what keeps the work inventive. This honestly started in a...
Let's call it a digital groundglass, or maybe a DGG. A sensor-backed, LCD-fronted device. On the most fundamental level, replacing a groundglass to do the following: 1. invert the image to correct as...
I'm still editing.
Yeah, a huge low-res ccd reading the lens. The problem with current ccds is that when they're recording the image, they need to be immaculately clean, protected, and amazingly...
I have this wild idea for a next-generation large format camera. It literally came to me in a dream a few weeks ago and now I can't stop thinking about it.
I dreamed that I was in the focusing bag...
Brian - as I mentioned, my levels are inconsistent also - the top dual level being the most off, and the right rear a little off. The bottom and left side are calibrated. I think the rear-standard...
I'll also give kudos to the Chamonix. My backpack with Chamonix 8x10, three lenses (some big), five film holders and misc gear is a manageable 26 pounds, tripod not included. They may currently be on...
Hi Jim - Great idea - I hope I'm not to late. Sending PM now with quantities & address.
I've been using the Induro A313 - aluminum alloy, not cf, for my Chamonix 8x10. The one problem I see is that the center column has a bit of a gap and can rotate l-r by about 1-2 degrees. A problem...
Yes, Try to process it. There is probably nothing there... but what if there is? I have had great luck doing the same.
Depends on what you're shooting. Wider than 65mm I would only use for landscape photography, where the distortion can enhance the resulting image. Shooting architectural subjects, I think 65mm starts...
I think the Chamonix would be a good choice. I don't own a Chamonix 4x5 (yet), but I've fondled one. I use a Chamonix 8x10 with a 210, 240 and 360mm in a backpack in the urban and sub-urban landscape...
B - I've been eyeballing most of these lenses for about a year, and I think I'm about to try the Wollensak 159mm. Single-coated, it could have problem with flare.
On fleabay, the least expensive...
Hi Mark -
I am an architect and a photographer, and I think you should learn with the 4x5, even if it's just a tool for learning. I shoot digital with shift lenses, MF, 4x5 and 8x10, so I know...
Thanks to all for the replies - I'm watching a few on fleabay and will get back to this post if I buy one without a shutter. I think I have a betax and an alphax around here somewhere...
I'm considering purchasing a Wollensak 159 mm (6 1/4-inch) f12.5 which has no shutter and I'm wondering what size/manufacturer shutter it takes. Seller tells me that it is close to a #3 Ilex shutter...
I like Google Checkout better than paypal, and I believe the fee they charge is a bit lower. I have purchased with it many times on 20x200.com and might add it to my own website. I might add both...
Cameras are like lovers. We could give any of them up if they treated us badly, except for those who are insanely (damagedly) loyal. I never would have thought that I would have fallen in love with a...
It sounds like many here are shooting perspective correction with Canon equipment. I've been something of a Nikon loyalist and am considering stepping up to the D700 with 24 & 45mm pc lenses. Has...
Nice camera and great report. I wonder what the weight comparison is to the 8x10? It looks to be about an inch smaller in the back in both directions than my 8x10 Chamonix. I also purchased a 4x10...
