Tim, you might have been thinking of Joel Leivick. He ultimately published a book, Carrara: The Marble Quarries of Tuscany, with the Stanford University Press in May 1999.
Tim:
There is a lot of excellent art out there that doesn't resonate with me. Aesthetics is a matter of judgment (and hence there are no absolutes) and it is OK to not like an artists work...
Gitzo CF or Ries.
In the US at least, under the Pruneyard case and its progeny, malls are private rather than public property. The owners can set up such rules as they see fit to limit a wide variety of activities,...

They seem to have bulbs for old Leica enlargers . . . . for a price, of course.
One thing I would be interested in is what are the youngsters learning in the various art schools and universities? Who is still teaching traditional large format photography and how are the...
I use and like the 10" WF Ektar -- even covers 11x14 so all the movement you could want for 8x10 -- but as has been noted it runs a bit large. G-Claron, Dagor, Fujinon A, Sironar, etc. all good too.
I love it for 35mm, like it for 6x7, but I'm not sure why I'd use it for LF.
Totally cool. :)
Film has been allegedly dying since the late 19th century. Maybe B&W will become an "alternative process" like gum, bromoil, PT/PD, etc., but it will be around long after we are dead.
I have no idea, but whatever the Deardorff clip is.
I liked the article on the new Fotoman and the article on using a Pinhole with a 4x5.
Zoom lenses? There are people here still reeling from the apostasy of telephoto lenses.
Many of the older cameras would do well if you are looking for relative simplicity. Seneca, Gundlach, Rochester, Kodak, Anscos, and Folmer & Schwing. Relatively simple 8x10 cameras with minimal...
It's called a contact print! ;) Epson Expression 10000XL or a Microtek 9800XL would work.
I'm a classicist. Tri-X in D-76 1+1.
Kerry Thalmann wrote a fairly comprehensive article on the 4x10 in a 2005 issue of View Camera. I believe Keith Canham regularly makes 4x10 holders. You can cut 8x10 transparency film down using a...
Since not a modern standard Copal 1 or 3, you will obviously need to recut the hole to mount the lens. There is always SK Grimes for such things. http://www.skgrimes.com
11x14. Though I would love to shoot 14x17 someday.
The 150mm Sinaron S is a rebadged (and allegedly quality picked) Rodenstock APO Sironar N. Ole is otherwise correct about the performance of the Symmar.
Well, they are different in angle of view, etc. And I much prefer the Zielskis versions (to the extent one can say from a computer monitor image). If they did copy Bialobrzeski, at least the...
Well, it depends on what you are shooting and how important having even minimal depth of field is. The Ronar will have some claim as a macro lens since often used for flat field/process camera...
35mm, 6x6cm, 6x7cm, 4x5, 8x10, 11x14. Mostly 6x7 lately it seems.
Mamiya 7II w/80mm lens. I keep a Leica mini-zoom in my briefcase.
Great post Bob! Thanks. Makes me surmise the best course is a box camera with a barrel lens. As for me, I think I'll stay indoors . . . .
I used to wear black to look hip. Now I wear it to not look so fat . . . .
I wish Fidelity still made plastic holders for 11x14. :( Hard to find used holders in that size and the new wood ones are really expensive.
So you ARE an ingenue!
Hey Kirk: Nice photo on the Freestyle catalog cover. I guess you are what passes for a LF ingenue?
You betcha! I did it with a Linhof Color and an Arca-Swiss Discovery for a several years. I've since switched to a folding wood field for various reasons. Wasn't that big of a deal as the Linhof...
You might also try the Bala area. Seems like there are many inexpensive cabin motels in the general area. I love all the cap rock formations, courtesy of the Laurentian Shield. Lots to see,...
I'll just add this for the out-of-towners -- St. Paul is a lovely city and the Minneapolis/St. Paul area has quite a lively photographic and arts community. Yes, it gets cold in the winter, but...
Jack:
It is the 4x5 Phillips that I DID buy from you (sorry Frank). Why you gave that one up I'll never understand, but I do appreciate it every day.
Regards,
Don
Because I'm really Edward Steichen. Or was it Imogen Cunningham? As long as people are having civil conversation about large format photography on this forum, I couldn't care less if the...
The N lenses are smaller and lighter and excellent for backpacking or where you are otherwise putting together a lightweight kit. Otherwise, Bob S. covered it pretty well. Both are truly excellent...
Cyrus is correct about the gist of Tribe's lecture. Anyway, the bottom line is that photographers really shouldn't worry about it; in regards to their photography at least. Tribe is arguing about...
You should probably look up Pat Hathaway in Monterey. Here is her website:

A Mamiya 7, if I'm being somewhat purposeful. I keep a Leica mini-zoom in my briefcase at all times.
Several bad 6x9 folders. Live and learn.
