I saw some very impressive 10x enlargements from 4x5 that were shot at f45. The photographer remarked that keeping everything in focus matters psychologically a lot more than having fine detail up...
Thanks, I should have been a little clearer re: what I'm trying to accomplish, though. I've recently seen a weird amount of demand for "normal" lenses with super shallow focus for video, but no one...
If anyone has one of these they ordered but aren't entirely thrilled with, I want to use one to build a sort of mini35 adapter to get super shallow focus video on my new camera. Since I'll only need...
Just based on mtf charts, the N is extremely close to the S (up until the edges, where it falls off) and superior to even the Apo-Symmar-L. But different manufacturers measure mtf differently, so......
Thanks all, this has been edifying. I take it that wind and creep during long exposures are the primary concerns with tripods for lf and so I've decided to try an Induro C214 tripod and a good...
Thanks for the feedback. This is more about weight than cost (though, unfortunately, lightweight and sturdy is the most expensive combination, so it's about cost, too). For me, the issue with large...
I've been shopping around for a new tripod for my field camera and I'm wondering why, beside the poor aerodynamics of an extended field camera and increased vibration from wind, should the quality...
That looks like a really nice tripod, unfortunately beyond my means at the moment. I can afford the C-214, though. Choices!
I hate to continue being "that guy" but how is the Hakuba:

I don't really understand what a...
Very interesting. Are you saying there's a .25mm variation between focal plane and film plane (plus or minus whatever is introduced by the film holder) with the 45a? That's petty egregious. Is...
I have the 758 cine, which I bought for around $400 on eBay. It's awesome.
If you're looking for a dual spot (1º and 3º) rather than a spot (1º) and incident meter, the 778 is probably a good...
Thanks, I should have known it was too good to be true.
I'll look into the gitzo studex. Portability is important to me, though, so I'm drawn to the feisol 3402, which claims it holds around 20...
I was shopping around for a used ball head and chinese-made carbon fiber tripod when I saw this tripod at B&H for $200:

You certainly got pretty darned close, though the reds are a bit more yellow in the digital manipulation. On the other hand, the cyan-heavy cast and near-clipping saturation point in the reds the...
Well, my bad snapshots aren't doing the filter any favors. I think it helps significantly in the first one, where it boosts both greens and reds; digitally correcting warm and cold tones separately...
At mid-day it's pretty color neutral, although shaded areas take on a green/cyan cast.
Some more before/afters of random objects outside. Potentially helpful for any area with both green and red...
"Strange" is definitely the word.
Looking at the absorption spectrum for didymium across the visible spectrum, it absorbs relatively little violet, not much blue, a little cyan, almost no green,...
So I got a cheap, generic brand ("promaster," which is probably rebranded hoya but maybe not) red enhancer in the mail today. It's uncoated and, um, green.
As seen against tungsten light it's...
Okay dumb question I didn't buy it.
For my Toyo 45aii.
It's a Gitzo 410 with Foba superball. I'm not going to bid if it goes much over $200 but I don't think it will. The cosmetic condition is rough, apparently one of the legs...
Looks like he shot these with an rz67 and 140mm lens on portra. Not so expensive after all!
300mm or 360mm sounds likely. The lens is somewhat wide for portraiture, based on the shape of the face. The lighting is pretty obvious from looking in the eyes, two huge soft lights very close to...
Thanks, everyone. I bought my lenses used, so the screws were already missing, unsurprisingly. But my lensboards don't use them, anyway.
I'm just going to leave things as is and not worry about...
Between the shutter and lensboard. Dumb question of the day.
If I tighten it until the lens doesn't rotate when turned I have to force it pretty hard. General wisdom says not to tighten metal...
I just bought a "budget" brand 67mm didymium filter (redhancer) to see how I like it. I'll try it (on my digital camera first) and report back. The blue and green filters do look suspiciously...
The red enhancers look pretty cool. But, in practice, are they really any better than just tinting the entire frame red? The "greenhancer" definitely just looks like a green-tinted filter.
If this goes wide enough bellows-wise and doesn't increase too high in price it looks awesome. Not sure about lensboard availability, though:

Similar, but different.
Anyhow, I've decided to wait and put my money toward a better tripod first....but I feel like I have some good choices in the 240-300mm range now. Thanks for all the help,...
If you haven't tried a field camera I think it's worth giving one a look. I just upgraded from an Omegaview 45E to a Toyo 45AII and the experience of using each camera is very different. At least...
I feel obligated to chime in since I'm partially "at fault" for this thread. This really confused me for a while, too, until I thought about it in terms of a macro filter resulting in closer focus,...
The reason you're getting that blue cast is not because of the bluer light at noon (granted, that may be a small part of it) but because the snow is reflecting the extremely blue sky. The blue rocks...
Thanks, I may try some portraiture at f8 with the 180mm sironar-s. First I need to figure out how to correct for imperfections in film registration. But I figure the corners won't matter as much...
Thanks Armin, have you tried the sironar-s wide open, by the way? At what stop does it become acceptable in terms of contrast and corner sharpness? How is the "bokeh"? It seems very good to me...
Thanks! That was my thinking, too. The better lens is corrected for good performance at f16, but how often will I shoot at f16 with such a long lens? Just past f22 there's already the loss of...
Good point. I'll get the less expensive lens. Coverage should not be an issue and I don't plan to go to 8x10 any time soon. If it's not good enough, I'll know soon.
Or I could go with my...
I didn't mean to imply the lens is anything less than very sharp; I haven't used it enough to have an educated opinion. It's just that what impressed me about it wasn't sharpness so much as color...
Thanks all, I'm tempted to stick with Rodenstock because so far so good. I think whether you like soft of sharp lenses has a lot to do with if you shoot color and if you're a beginner. I shoot...
Thanks, everyone. So far I like these focal lengths, too, except 90mm is a bit wide (although I used 24mm on 135 all the time so I am confident I will grow into it). 180mm is great, natural but not...
I've just started shooting 4x5 (so far so difficult) and have already realized I need (or at least want) a longer lens than I have; it will mostly be for deep focus landscapes. My current kit is:
