Studio shoot went well. PC port kept being flaky, thankfully my lights didn't break and I didn't get a single bad exposure due to it. I'll have it checked as part of a CLA.
I developed the slides,...
Took about an hour with a file. Lens fit perfectly on the lens board, and so did the board on the camera. Eyeballing focus on the rear screen seemed to be spot on.
Tested with instant film, and...
That's what I figured as well, but I got blank stares at two shops.
I finally figured out at an always helpful local camera shop that there was a retaining ring in a deep recess, which I was able to unscrew without a spanner wrench, which didn't reach deep enough....
Any idea how I could remove the lens board from the Heliar lens/shutter assembly? Pictured below, it is the square metal piece, along with the silver ring attached to it. It rotates freely, and there...
A "while" in the making, my Fine Art Pinups project finally has a website. Shot on Gowlandflex 4x5 TLR.

Did a search for this to see if it was posted. Bumping a worthy project.
New try with two more:

The biggest prints are 100cm x 125cm (40"x50"), don't think corners would get the job done..
There's no difference to the approach as far as I can tell, that's why the question :) As mentioned in the OP, mounting to the backing board is easier - but if there's a compelling reason to mount to...
When using t-hinges to mount prints, should I mount the print to the backing board, or the mat? Most guides say backing board, but mounting to the mat brings the print ever so closer to the mat -...
I think making the lens board is the easy part...
Over the years I've been harping about my Gowlandflex and have received lot of help and inspiration from this forum. As giving back I thought I'd share some of my photos. These are the type Mr...
You'd lose that bet.
E., I'm aware of the nominal vs actual focal length difference, but I'm not too worried about that. I use the camera at camera-to-subject distances which vary very little...
I recently bought a beautiful 1929 Heliar lens after years of searching in the hopes that I could swap it with the Schneider mounted on my Gowlandflex. The local store quoted me 500 EUR (650 USD)...
Forgot to mention this is in studio with studio flashes, so subject movement is not really an issue.
Thank you for all the help - great to hear that f/22 is a good middle ground for 4x5, and not...
I've been doing some number crunching to find an optimal aperture for a shoot. It's full length portraits with a Gowlandflex 4x5 and 180mm f/5.6 Symmar S, and the print sizes will be up to 40x50",...
I just installed a new Yanke gg on my Gowlandflex, and it exceeded my expectations. Exact dimensions as ordered, and they even made custom hairlines on it to match the original (which I broke) as per...
It was loose when I got it, and it just pulled off when I detached a PC cord a while back.
Dropped it off at my local camera store for repairs.
Looking at pictures of an opened Copal shutter it looks like it'll get a bit too involved to fix it myself. I'll take it to my local dealer and see if they can fix it.
Sorry, it's actually Copal #1 shutter. Ash, thanks for the link, eBay has the same for Copal shutters which I could use.
Now I have to figure out how to get the shutter/lens assembly off the lens...
I broke the nipple off the PC port on my Compur #1 shutter. If I try to put it back in, it doesn't stay put but will fall easily. Flash is also quirky since I need to hold it in a certain position...
I'm not trying to capture the ambient lights - if strobes overpower them, great, makes my life easier. Obviously they will show up when they're in the frame, but if there's limited or no impact from...
Thanks for all the tips - this is (perhaps not surprisingly) complicated. The shoots are portraits and pinups, not architecture, which is why I'm shooting Astia (and testing EPP). So longer shutter...
Yes, I'm aware of Kirk's (and Frank's) credentials :) I'm looking for the least painless and most cost-effective solution.
I'm quite proficient with PS, but from past experience color balancing in...
It sounds like a huge PITA in post with mixed sources? For example, having background in orange cast and subject in mostly in good color balance, but with some bleed from ambient light, more in some...
I have Elinchrom D-Lite it 4s, and have an upcoming shoot in a rented apartment with light fixtures - some fluorescent, some incandescent. I've only shot in studio with strobes thus far, so using...
Don't think I have the coordination to operate a drill and a hammer at the same time...
In my experience products priced at a premium have better after-sales support, which partly justifies higher prices even if the product itself is only marginally better quality.
That was quick, received a scanned reference sheet from Gitzo/Manfrotto customer service which answers the question. A retaining bolt on the side of the tripod has to be loosened which allows one to...
I just received a used Gitzo GT5540LS tripod which didn't come with manuals. I already dropped a mail to Gitzo UK to ask if they have manuals for older models.
Can anyone tell me how to remove the...
No, I use the rear ground glass when I shoot higher than waist level :)
Mr Gowland's widow might still have some reflex viewers available, there's contact info on petergowland.com.
Acratech Ultimate Ballhead which goes to 90 degrees and below. Gowlandflex might be light in the LF world, and although the Acratech is very solid it would not be the most stable setup even on a...
I'll be damned - there's a small thumbscrew, function previously unknown. I unscrewed it and the back rotates smoothly and locks back in place with the screw! Film loading is from the top when...
That's exactly what I thought as well, but even had a guy at my local vintage camera shop confirm it doesn't rotate.
Didn't occur to me I could unscrew it, have to check it out.
My Gowlandflex has the film back mounted horizontally, and it can't be rotated. Is L-bracket my only option to get vertical shots? Focusing would have to be done on the rear ground glass so a cloth...
That is an amazing photo of a stunning lady!
Thanks for the correction. I've been meaning to find out how they look, but don't know of any galleries having any such prints here.
Dye transfer is a dead process and I believe Ctein is the only person with supplies to make any more prints, so analog (dye) vs digital printing is an academic debate at best - or am I missing...
