    Re: Profile Problem

You can soft-proof from Lab just the same as RGB. But be aware that you'll get different results by printing from Lab than by converting back to an RGB working space then printing as the mapping out...

    Re: Profile Problem

I'm not sure why you're assigning a space. This should be set by the scanner software or raw conversion. Also, be aware that printer spaces aren't gray-balanced nor linear and while you can edit in...

    Re: Profile Problem

I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to do, but Photoshop keeps no record of what space you were in before the change to Lab. You'll have to specify the space you want in Convert to Profile. If...

The fact of the matter is that, in the rights hands and with some tweaking, the method I outlined is very powerful and achieves results that can't be otherwise obtained. And it has more knobs to play...

    Re: George DeWolfe's Perceptool

    Try this:

    1. Duplicate layer
    2. Apply large diameter Gaussian Blur (50-250 pixel radius depending on resolution and desired effect)
    3. Invert layer
    4. Set blend mode to Overlay
    5. Adjust...
  7. Re: side by side comparison... large print digital back VS 4x5 color film

I have a 4800 and 7900, and before that a 7800. There's just no comparison between the 7900 B&W output and that from the earlier x800 generation. The differences stem from a number of factors:...

Re: Yet Another Color Question, I'm Sorry

    You got it Matt.

Does your monitor have an "sRGB" button? If so, you can just press this to view your files.

Re: Yet Another Color Question, I'm Sorry

No. If not colour managed it will just send the data to the display. If your monitor has a larger gamut than sRGB it will display as highly saturated. You need to re-calibrate your monitor to sRGB...

Re: Ink Jet - Dark Prints:-(

    1. Set a realistic display luminance value. For most users/ambient light conditions this is 100 cd/m2 or less.

    2. Use a working space based on L*. A gamma of 2.2 dictates that low values will...

Hue is retained in luminosity blends, but a curve set to luminosity blend mode is NOT the same as applying the same curve to the luminosity of the original. Only the latter will retain the luminosity...

    Re: Moving between mode's question

Lab is intended for quick & dirty changes to an image, namely in Margulis' thinking where you have a short amount of time to work on an image and knock it into shape before moving onto the next. Most...

    Re: CS4 issues and forums?

I submitted seven CS4 bugs to the above, four of which made it to engineering. Whether the fixes make it into the upcoming 11.0.1 update remains to be seen. The other three are just sitting in their...
  14. Re: Monitor-Print Matching: Please Verify This Solution

There's some good advice in the colorwiki article. If I can add my own:

    1. Notebook and iMac screens aren't satisfactory for colour critical work.

    2. Most common recommendations for monitor...

Re: New Epson Wide Format Printers

I just got my 7900 with the SpectroProofer a few days ago. A very different beast to the 7800 I previously owned. I'm still finding my way around it but first impressions are very favourable. It's...
  17. Re: Shouldn't these drum scans be better than this?

Just getting a "drum scan" means nothing. I've seen some pretty lacklustre drum scans (from high end scanners) in my time, most of which cost the customer serious money. It's more about the dialog...

  20. Re: 2 Epson Printers, inconsistent B&W output question

Are you using CS4 and ABW for the 4880? If so, there's your problem. Adobe has been dicking around with the printing interface in CS4 and it's best avoided until they sort it all out. Maybe in CS5!
  21. Re: Anyone else buying the new epson printers?

I expect to have a 7900 next week, just waiting on the SpectroProofer for shipment. The 7900 will allow me to add baryta papers to rag which I currently use exclusively. It will also free up my 4800...
  22. Re: Question On Printing Black And White Using Epson

Select ABW in the driver. It will convert RGB input to grayscale. You will however have to match the gamma of the image data to the tone curve you've selected with ABW settings. The best way to do...
  23. Re: Would Epson 3800 B&W look like darkroom-print?

The LAB values show how linear the transform is, both in density and tonality. With a linear
response, you can then concentrate on using Photoshop to get the look you want with predictable results....
  24. Re: Would Epson 3800 B&W look like darkroom-print?

How better? This is a genuine question. My experience is that it's easier to achieve tonal linearity (from paper white to neutral black) with ABW that it is with QTR when working with the K3 inkset,...

  27. Re: side by side comparison... large print digital back VS 4x5 color film

    Re: Epson 7800 Printer Workflow???

What he said. I had a 7800 (sold and now awaiting a 7900) and the only thing really different to the 3800 is that the 7800 is a single black printer ... you don't want to be swapping and changing...
  31. Re: Howtek 4500-Questions-Software, Comparisons, Etc.

  38. Re: Color to black and white conversion in Photoshop - best way?

Yes, all RGB. As such it avoids the vagaries you get with the choice of RGB space when converting out of Lab. This is an area Dan totally ignores in his Canyon Conundrum book. Lobster's Luminosity...
  39. Re: Color to black and white conversion in Photoshop - best way?

If you're comfortable with Lab, you'll find Lobster very similar. But without the side effects. You can also retain your layer stack from start to finish.
  40. Re: Color to black and white conversion in Photoshop - best way?

Personally, I no longer go anywhere near Photoshop's Lab mode. It has holes you can drive a truck through, but if it's working for you well and good.

Dan is one of the sharpest guys around when it...
