For me, Cinepaint seems to work pretty well for 16-bit color transparencies (which isn't surprising), as well as for 8-bit black and white (at which point, you might as well just use GIMP). For me at...
Thanks, Don! Assuming that the reference to "the 16 exposure values in an image" means 16 bits per channel, it sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. I'll download the trial and put it through its...
Likewise. I've been an OS (and occasionally run-time system for C and Fortran) developer since the late 70s. I have a miniscule Window$ partition (whose main purpose seems to be downloading security...
I *am* running 2.6.
Even with GEGL enabled, a 16-bit color image is converted to 8-bit on input. The internal operations are done in a larger colorspace, but the data is still truncated when you...
So, I recently acquired not one, but two film scanners (a SprintScan 120 for the little stuff, and a SprintScan 45 Ultra for 4x5). Vuescan works quite well., but my post-scanning options seem to be a...
Except that there *aren't* any 4x5 film scanners any more. :(
Which one's which ?
The use of the metric system in the US was officially sanctioned by Congress in 1866.
However, 1893 was when the metric system was formally adopted as the fundamental standard of weights and...
The US has been officially metric since the Mendenhall Order in 1893.:D
I'll second the vote for Photocraft in Boulder, although I've only used them for MF and 4x5.
Thank you all very much - now if I can just manage to get all the gear packed in such a way that United will transport (but not destroy) it, I'll be set!

I'm going to be spending several weeks in the Cambridge, MA area, and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about where to obtain LF film and processing (E6 and BW)?
Steve
Just to clarify: if you examine the negative directly with a loupe (taking the scanner completely out of the equation), does the negative still look unsharp (I think this is what you mean, but I'm...
You forgot "forgetting to close the shutter before inserting the film holder and pulling the dark slide." I did that twice last week. :-(
Steve
Their old website is dead, but they're still around (as of yesterday - last post to their blog):

Their blog contains the following comment:

I can hardly wait for Ted's review in VC (hint, hint).
When I lived in Tokyo in the early 90s, I started using Velvia for people pictures. I found that the various Ektachromes seemed to render Asian skin with a really unpleasant greenish cast. The...
Yes, it apparently has extended red sensitivity (out to 720nm, according to the web page). One wonders if it will only be available in 35mm, or if it will be possible to get it in "reasonable"...
They did, however, have a lovely selection of iPod cases.
Steve
You know you're living in degenerate times when your local camera store doesn't *carry* cable releases anymore.
Steve
I definitely agree with Dan here. The El-Nikkor (reversed) should be an excellent lens, but it's just too long for what you're trying to do - you'll need 880mm of extension to get 10x with that lens....
I do not doubt for a moment that the primary digital image produced by a high-end MF digital back with excellent lenses will be better than a secondary digital image produced by scanning an excellent...
Did you try reversing the El-Nikkor? That would put you in its optimal magnification range. I would expect good results from doing this.
Steve
I have two Luminars (40mm and 25mm) and a Leitz Photar (80mm) that I have used extensively (and quite successfully) with medium format. They all deserve their reputations - they're absolutely superb...
I think it depends on what your definition of "equivalent" is.
If you're asking whether we will ever see single, full-frame large format CCD sensors (4x5 or 8x10), I think the answer is no - not...
Yes, a Grafmatic will work on a Tachi. At least they do on mine.
Steve
I wonder if all the recent surveys showing a continued preference for film (at least for some kinds of work) influenced the release of this film. It would be nice to think that Kodak has started...
I'm sorry to hear this, since I also shoot a lot of MF (and recently had my grandfather's IIIf-s serviced by Focal Point, so I might shoot some casual 35 as well). An improved TMX might be overkill...
$1200??????
I think you're spending too much for your CPP-2.
I snagged mine (with lift) for $399 on the auction site and have sunk maybe $100 more into tanks and reels (I haven't gotten an expert...
I suppose I should've been a little more specific. While a prosumer scanner has its appeal as a means of quickly and cheaply digitizing work, many of the posts here (especially yours, by the way)...
Obviously, you should carry one of these with you:

So how hard is it to become a competent scanner/printer with modern, relatively high-end scanning hardware and software? I'm a relatively capable (if somewhat out of practice) wet darkroom guy...
Purely from a marketing perspective, I think the following may be part of your problem:
Just speaking as someone who specifically looks for interesting and well-done photographs when I wander...
Well, if you're really suffering from long lens lust there's always *this* example of wretched excess from the Auction Site That Must Not Be Named:

It's interesting to note that Justice Holmes's famous quote about shouting fire in a theater comes from a decision in a case (Schenck vs. United States) involving the arrest of a man for the...
Thanks, RJ!
I realized this was the issue, but Schneider is so good about providing information for discontinues lenses that I was surprised that they didn't mention which filter to use.
Steve
So I've recently become the proud owner of a 65mm f/5.6 Super Angulon, and I *know* that I'll need a a center filter for it. The Schneider web pages have proved amazingly uninformative about exactly...
Luminars turn up for semi-reasonable prices on Ebay every now and then. I have two of them
(25mm and 40mm), as well as an 80mm Leitz Photar and have done a lot of medium format work with them. They...
I'm trying to picture (pun intended) taping "a chip" to my girlfriend's face so I can measure the magnification before I shoot ;-)
*Somewhere* I've got an old Kodak Master Photo Guide (anyone else...
