I was given a short prognosis, and have started to put my affairs in order. The disposition of my photo collection is my current project. I would like to see it go to a museum or a teaching...
Yesterday afternoon I went out, my camera in tow, and found a huge maple whose lower branches were stretching out and barely touching the softly flowing water of the Pecatonica River. The light was...
Ditto to Steve’s remarks with respect to the Large Format Conference in Rockford. I will be sharing a booth there with Reis Tripods and will have some Wehman Field Cameras there to display. I do...
Using Aerospace as a reference, the level of precision in a large format camera is what we call in the trade, “slop.” Which is to say, yes, as far as execution goes, it would be easy for anyone with...
Sorry for the confusion, I meant: Load the film in the processing hanger with the notch code up.
Yes, the notch is down, in the camera, when the holder is inserted right-handed. Since the sky is...
A belated congratulations. Well deserved!!
A neat habit to get into when using hangers is to load the film with the notch code up. Since most sky shots are horizontal, this places the sky away from the hanger holes.
Couldn't agree more: Sure, as the supply of materials diminishes, the cost will go up, but the same thing will happen to the product of the effort - fewer large format photographs = more valuable...

Ditto to "bring back the film pack." I used them in the Navy, in the early sixties. Yes, they were light, fast, and had a loyal following, but they didn't exactly take over the world; they took a...
Rodinal stores nicely in the freezer.
That’s all right. I left out the bamboo spikes.
Andrew, my condolences: I know how you feel. The first time we were broken into, they got everything of value that could be easily carried. The cop that investigated suggested that for small stuff...
I don’t think that it is coincidence or a matter of aesthetic merit that the work of Weston, Adams and Karsh is “aeons” away from the young. Which category of work requires discipline and hard work...
A screen backing is a good idea in any drum that has problems with circulation. The one that I use is a stitching project grid that is sold in stores like Hobby Lobby. One version is shown here: ...
"knowledge" and "wisdom" will be as elusive as ever
Add to that, “Vision.”
Back when photography was the revolutionary new technology that was going to make painting obsolete, a funny thing...
Al, I too graduated in ’69 – Illustration major. I don’t remember you, but that was a long time ago. Boris Dobro, an instructor whom you no doubt remember well, used to say that if you didn’t have a...
Actively photograph, no. Inactively photograph, yes.
You know, I really don’t know. It seems that whenever I need something, all I have to do is mention it to one of the young, female, groupies who are always hanging around and soon enough, it...
Someone years ago told me that photography was “show business.” It was hard for me to believe at the time, because you had guys like Eugene Smith to refute any notion that photography was anything...
TMX and TMY - 8x10. Thanks for doing this.
John: great post! While you were at Art Center I was up the coast at Brooks (GI Bill). They weren’t as artsy but more hands-on-practical. It came in handy at my first job as a jack-of-all-trades...
I do this frequently when shooting sunrises. It prevents the film from popping when the sun hits a cold camera. The only thing you need to do differently is to store the film face-to-face. If a...
Did someone say “old timer”?……slowly he turns………For a time, while I was a Navy photographer, I had a permanent red line across the back of my left hand from carrying around one of those things. When...
My commercial work has been 100% digital since 1996 and the introduction of the DCS 460. I talked the company that I worked for into shelling out $50,000.00 for it and a couple of dye-sub printers...
Anyone doing anything is not art. A baby screaming its head off – however self expressive – is not art. Self-expression, in itself, is not art. Originality and vision alone will not produce art –...
I agree with Kirk 100%. The photograph stands apart in the world of visual communication. The photographic process captures visual information in a more unbiased fashion than any other medium. And...
Speaking of multi-sheet film holders: how many out there remember the film pack? As a Navy photographer in the sixties, my life was made a lot easier, by using film packs.
For those who have never...
Tim, you have a couple of good lines there. Ditto.
As far as the Type “C” process goes: No, I gave it up for digital 9 years ago. Since all of my color work is commercial, this is...
Neal,
Whenever the word “Banquet” appears on this forum, I feel compelled to jump in. In the early 70’s I earned a substantial part of my income by doing exactly the sort of thing you propose. I...
You might find it easier to just do your film work in the closet and your printing out in the garage, where a little light leak here and there would not be that significant.
About 10 years ago I inherited a dozen boxes of 8x10 Plus X when my employer shut down its wet labs. Although they are dated 1982, they have been kept frozen, and the only age-related artifact is a...
Robert, Eric,
Try http://www.mcmaster.com This is a truly extraordinary resource.
Search on: "spring-tempered stainless steel," to find material for your back springs.
"Compositional Rules for Photographers" is a very small subset of a more global subject, "Two Dimensional Design." On this, there is much written, much debate and no conclusive scholarship. All one...
Neal,
If you have Photoshop and some transparency material you can make some neat gradations to insert in your enlarger in place of the negative. You’ll need to throw it out of focus to avoid...
This is, indeed, a viable method. I've been doing it for years.
The squares only have to be large enough to read with your spot meter. The trick is arriving at accurate densities. I was able to...
The Borg.
You might also check the evenness of the pressure applied across the entire area of the plate. An easy thing to try is to slip a few pieces of cardboard under the foam mat in the center of the area,...
With long exposures being the current rage, why not long exposures from the deck of a ship? What better rig for that endeavor than LF?
Look at your scene and determine where the plane of critical focus should be.
Then select three points which fall in the plane and produce a good sized triangle on your ground glass. Pull these...
