My Sinars always did this twist when you tightened it. I am guessing it is because when you tighten the slit in the plastic ring around the rail compresses closed. I solved the issue by always...
Here's a little more Sinar info for the curious.
The Sinar Alpina was designed to compete as an entry level "student" camera with the Toyo "Omega View". It is just an F with a different rail and...
Thank you
Following along in this thread has been very enjoyable for me. I gave seminars for Sinar from 1972-1982. I was also the large format instructor at many workshops, including my own. I was on the...
I agree and have been drying that way for 50 years.

They release/remove the ground glass spring back when you use the "Graflock" system for some roll film backs or other accessories.
Al was very special to me; my friend, my mentor and the man who gave me my first opportunity to teach workshops at his Victor School and also introduced me to Ansel Adams. No other photographer has...
Here are more details on this workshop:
Some of the spots we will be visiting in the Carmel/Monterey area - Pt. Lobos, Garrapata beach, Historic Monterey, The Weston Gallery, the Photography West...
Steve Simmons, Gordon Hutchings and myself are offering a workshop along the Big Sur California Coast. Check it out. Thanks
That's great to know. It's always nice to see that large format is alive and well!
Hello,
I am in Huntington Beach. My experience teaching large format spans about 40 years. I lectured nationally for Sinar and taught LF at the Ansel Adams Workshops and others. Steve Simmons...
It's not just for advanced large format photographers. Because it is a small group we can work with the attendees individually.
Come join Steve Simmons and myself for a Large Format Workshop in the Eastern Sierras. Fun and learning.
I just saw this thread. Best of luck to you Bob in whatever road you take.
Thanks!
Anyone know if the Linhof Technika and Toyo 45A boards are interchangeable?
I was hiking up to Sentinel Dome in Yosemite. I had my Toyo 45AR on an aluminum Bolex tripod slung over my shoulder. Another photographer passed me with his light weight wooden camera on a wooden...
If your dust spots occurred when exposing the film they would be clear pin holes and prints or scans would appear as black spots. Make sure your film holders are meticulously cleaned before loading...
You may be correct but I have always understood that "macro" refers to magnification up up 1:1 and "micro" to magnifications greater than 1:1.
I own a Sinar F and a Toyo 45AR. Both are excellent cameras. If I had to pick one it would probably be:
1. Toyo 45AF for landscape only as the movements are too limited for architecture or studio...
Yes they were. Now if I could only get the new breed of photographers to understand the value of learning large format film photography ...............
I never meant to suggest that Sinar sold more diverse products than Linhof.
I worked for the succession of US distributors of Sinar in the '70's and early '80's. I never met Karl Hans Koch, the...
LOL, ya think?
There will always be a market for high quality gear. Sinar also sold much more than their camera line. What has put them into the lesser position that they have today was/is bad management coupled...
Near Ansel's death 16x20 Moonrise prints were selling at gallery auctions for $25,000 and up. The most Ansel was paid for one of those prints was $900. That in a nutshell defines the fine art...
Well said Bob!.
John,
I don't think so. The length of the plunger on the Sinar cable release is much longer than anything else that I have seen. It also takes some "push" to trigger the shutter so the cable has...
Steve,
Your dedication to a medium and a format that most in the industry would call dead and buried is very much appreciated by this old lover of getting under the dark cloth and enjoying the...
You could probably modify the light head to stay in place with some brackets if you tilted the enlarger but it is not designed for horizontal printing.
Rick
Hey Matus,
That is a great meter. I would suggest looking for one that was modified by Zone VI. They occasionally show up on Ebay. The modified meter last sold new for around $625 here in the...
Steve,
Sounds like a great conference is in the works!
Vistor is a wonderful place, at least it was during my last visits as a large format and lighting instructor for Al Weber's Victor School....
