Re: Tripod for a Calumet 4x5

I started using my 4x5 Calumet on a Tiltall in 1973. It was a very good paring for many years. I've gotten another Tiltall using the old one to hold my iPad when I shoot digitally. (The images...
  2. Re: Just won eBay bid Calumet 4x5 mono-rail!!

Congrats, A.D. My first 4x5 was a Calumet. I went to Calumet Photographic near Chicago before they had any stores. Expecting a retail environment I found that it was a factory with a small sales...

    Re: August 2015 portraits

This photo represents my return to film for some personal and commercial projects. It's been a long time! My friend Alva posed while I used my last three 13-year old sheets of Type 55. Two of the...

    Re: bogen 3047 vs. tiltall

I have an old Star-D Tiltall that I bought over 40 years ago and have a newer Tiltall. (The older one had NO plastic pieces.) I use them both regularly. For years I used the Star-D with a light...

    Re: David Vestal

My son really valued his time with Vestal at Pratt about 12 years ago. I still have a note from Vestal about my son's work. Vestal was an inspiration to me as a young photographer in the 70s.

Thanks Austin. Your photos and the history of American music make me want to wander the Mississippi delta. In Chicago we've still got Buddy Guy, Bob Margolin (pictured in the Muddy photos) and a...

Re: safe haven for tiny formats

I've really enjoyed your work, Austin. I haven't posted much here but when I saw your Clarksdale photos I thought it would be a good time to put up a photo of the Mojo Man that I shot in 1976. You...

Re: Best tripod head for 4x5 camera?

I generally don't like ball heads for large format cameras but one with a friction adjustment can make sense. I use a Foba Superball with the friction adjustment set pretty heavy and it works well.

    Re: Altman Camera

This takes me back, alright. It was a special place for this then-young photographer in the early '70's. It was heartbreaking when they very suddenly closed. Calumet became my go-to provider after...

You might want to take a look at Photocrati. I have found it to be really flexible. I changed a few things and I did have a web designer tweak it for me for my purposes but there's a lot of freedom...

  20. Re: Advice on a good stiff 8x10 filed camera

I would say Arca-Swiss F or Sinar F. Best weight to sturdiness ratio and both have good support in parts. The wind can move ANY camera you choose. You just need to get it where you want to take...
  21. Re: So the new 4x5 that I bought has base tilts, which I've never had before

I did a lot of product photography with an old axis-tilt Calumet 4x5 and Cambo 8x10. The clients liked to have every part of each product in focus. Tilts, swings, rise or falls and every possible...
  22. Re: Help Me Decide - 1st Monorail 4x5 - 3 options

As one who has always framed the shot - including rough focus - then tilted as needed, it was always annoying to have to then re-focus. Base tilts mostly eliminate that need to re-focus - or...
  23. Re: Help Me Decide - 1st Monorail 4x5 - 3 options

Yep... Frank nailed it and he ought to know. He's bought, sold and used everthing you'd ever want to consider.

My vote goes to the Arca C. It's VERY light, solid and has base (and axis) tilts...

  26. Re: Slow scans, inefficient system resource usage with Silverfast 8.0.1r13 DEMO and V

  27. Re: Recommendations sought for a lightweight 8x10 camera

The engineering and materials in the Arca Swiss F line 8x10 makes a relatively light candidate for your use. "Light" doesn't mean lacking sturdiness too.

    Re: Epson 4990 heads-up

I get really excellent results from 4x5 or MF film scanned on my v750. With care I can get really good (B&W) 35mm film scans as well. An outstanding 16x20 output from 4x5 film should not be a...
