Yes I've been a member a while, but in the last 3-4 years I haven't done much shooting or spent much time on this (or any other) photography forum (only around 20 posts on this site since mid-2007),...
Hi, I've noticed that my classified offering cheap drum scans was deleted, and I understand that it is outside the stated rules for classifieds.
That said, I was wondering where would be a place...
I definitely plan to do cyanotypes / argyrotypes / Van Dyke, and Pt/Pd may be in my future too.
I found a local pro lab, JW Labs in Raleigh, that will print on Pictorico with their high end inkjet if I supply the transparency medium.
The guy there asked if the aqueous inks they use in their...
I really don't feel like buying a photo printer for the occasional negative I'd like to enlarge. Are there any commercial labs / printers that do this?
I found a nice photo store in Pest, I believe it was across from the Kalvin Ter metro stop, near where the road curves around to the national museum. It didn't have much film, but they have a lot of...
They completely botched 2 rolls of Velvia 50 and 2 of Provis 400X, they're overfeveloped and discolored. They even admitted it was their own mistake, but god forbid they should offer me a refund or...
I mostly use Prazio mount, and occasionally SDS montage gel, and both are fine for mounting. Even when done, though, I need to make sure the wet scanner wipes or kimwipes are disposed of in something...
I don't really do this professionally, but I do a few orders for people now and then. And I'm in the middle of a big order for someone and I've gotten very lightheaded from the Prazio drum cleaner...
How did you scan it?
Unless the waterfall is VERY dense or the rest of it VERY underexposed, most scanners will be able to pull in the highlight and shadow detail from a B&W neg. You can determine...
I did the same. I scanned hundreds of my own before ever touching an important one of my own (let alone a customer's).
The biggest trick I ran into was getting lint and dust on the outside of the...
I do a few bulk orders just to help pay for the scanner (this isn't part of any larger business). The upside is that drum scan services are SO expensive that you can undersell established services...
I agree -- I think that you're more likely to suffer from motion, shallow DOF, and/or diffraction from a tiny aperture, so that if you're trying to get a small coin to fill up an 8x10 frame, you...
How many tripods are you going to need?
Do you put diopters on the lens? That may get you closer without needing so much extension.
Here is a very long tutorial I wrote a while back on making B&W conversions using several different methods, and including pictures. You may need to create a logon to see it.

For what it's worth, I've had a number of 4x5 chromes professionally scanned on a Creo Eversmart Supreme, and since getting my Howtek 4500 I've re-scanned them. And the color accuracy and shadow...
Thanks, Adam. I myself am not so interested that I'd contact him, but I'd love it if it were either formally published or at least posted on the internet with an open methodology as a resource to us...
We talk about this stuff all the time, but honestly why aren't there any published, methodologically sound comparisons out there?
First of all, pick an outcome measure for the comparison. If it's...

You could consider fluid mounting it in the glass holder using Prazio anti-Newton spray or oil. Kami (from Aztek) would probably be good too. It's the same stuff used to mount film for a drum scan.
Not sure the size of mine, I'm pretty sure I can do 11" on the longest side but others here would know better.
They're a lot easier. I never get bubbles with 135 or 120, but with 4x5 and 8x10 it...
Just speaking practically, I got sick of spending $50 on Eversmart Supreme scans, which were great but expensive. I strongly considered a Nikon 9000, but I shoot a lot of 4x5 and 8x10. So the best...
Yes, if needed. I'm getting them to do some Lightjet prints for me, and if they were still doing Cibachromes I'd get them to do that as well. But accessible and convenient are not synonyms. If they...
I only ask because they don't list anything above 120/220 for C41 or E6 on their online pricelist.
Be fair, they're a 90 minute drive from home and they're a more than 30 minute drive from work --...
Do they have quick turnaround?
I was so spoiled when I lived in Boston, same day (usu 2 hour) service for C41 or E6 of any size.
The E6 lab (Chromex) in Greensboro will stop processing film at the end of 2008. My hobby of late is shooting 8x10 sheets of Astia and Velvia, so this is tough to take. Already in Greensboro I can...
Tri-Color Labs, which is down in New Bedford.

They do C41 and B&W.
For E6 the only place I know of is Color Services, Inc, which is in Needham (near the junction...
I care less about EXIF information now than I did when I was shooting just with DSLRs. Especially things like shutter speeds and apertures. Much more meaningful to me are things like how someone...
I've decided to press on with my hex plates, because I just can't deal with getting a different tripod head right now. Enough damn money already.
So for my 8x10, which is a wooden folding camera,...
Never have. I'd love to shoot Graves Light, but that one is way out there in the outer Harbor. I've kayaked to Boston Light, and you can get there by tour boat, though I haven't photographed it.

I don't think that's at all self-contradictory, but that's probably because I see the result as simply the end-terminus of a process. It's not like an exclamation point, where the line is the process...
That's almost an amazing thing for me to read. I'm sort of stunned. It's like you saying you play chess because you like to beat people, not because you like the game of chess.
And it's NOT...
Hey Petr,
Welcome from another multi-format Bostonian!

You misquoted me, I didn't write that.
And I use digital enough to know it's not easy or mistake proof. I was agreeing with Rob's statements about enjoying the process and the meaningless fights...
Wow, that's a pretty stark and utilitarian perspective (and probably more so than you really meant). You draw a distinction between the process and the result that is meaningful only in the context...
Hi Rory,
Thanks for the nice comment. I used a LOT of front rise for this cathedral picture. I could probably calculate how much, but if you look at the vanishing point of the horizontal lines...
