My version of the knob doesn't have much bearing surface between the back face of the tilt knob and the end of the hollow bolt. Something like a cone-shaped washer between them would probably help....
I'll try to attach a video, which may help. As Graham Patterson explains, tilt is locked (by friction) to both ends of the lugged hollow bolt head; rise/fall locks (by friction) to the standard....
The inside of the hollow bolt is bored smooth in the double action knobs I made, not threaded. The hollow bolt + thin female threaded knob lock rise/fall—the lugs on the hollow bolt slide in the...
Thanks everyone for the responses. Shooting wide open or close to it seems obvious now that I hear from you all.
About subject variety and portability: I have two smaller cameras (including Kodak...
A few months ago, I purchased a Kodak Century No. 7 studio camera at an estate sale, along with a Thomas Hobson Cooke Series II 15" f/4.5 knuckler, Pinkham Bi-Quality 14" f/4.5, Taylor Taylor Hobson...
Thanks for the response. The Century 7 and Noba cameras both came with Packard Ideal shutters, and the lot also included 2 extra Packard Ideal two-way shutters. Not sure if any of them work. I'll...
Haven't posted on these forums for some time. My interest has mostly been DIY cameras and Polaroid 110 conversations, but over the weekend I bought a large lot of mostly LF stuff at an estate...
The style of bolt in the first ali express link looks like it would work well, but if the actual bolt is 12mm diameter, that seems pretty chunky.
Here's pics of what I did. Note the wide plastic...
Hi R,
I was also interested in Chamonix/Intrepid style dual knobs, and couldn't find anything available so I designed and made my own. Haven't used them for a camera yet (camera design isn't...
Oops. I misinformed him--didn't have the meter in front of me and thought it was a Gossen model with only one battery. Looks like I need to call back Monday--maybe there's hope for my Lunasix after...
Thanks for the link--unfortunately, it doesn't look like he repairs the Weston Master III, just IV and later. Guess it will have to remain a nice (non-working) display piece.
Just called--unfortunately, service isn't available for either. Too bad—the Weston in particular is a beautifully-made object. But new selenium cells are apparently no longer made.
I have a Weston Master III with a dead cell, and a Gossen Lunasix that needs conversion to non-mercury battery. Both were thrift store finds—the Weston worked when I bought it—so I have almost no...
Fair enough. Let's say, there are aspects of my place (or anyone's place, I suppose) that are unconsidered, and escape attention. I'd like to pay attention to those things. I'm interested in what...
They seem to be going for a little more than a quarter these days.
My kind of thing!
Salmo22,
A thought: there might be an opportunity to emphasize the 'sign-ness' of the semi trailer by framing it as dead-on as possible, making it a flat, graphic element in contrast to a landscape...
It's not that I think communication or sharing value is irrelevant for everyone, it just doesn't happen to be my intention in making work. As a sculptor, I didn't think the objects I was making was...
Thanks, everyone, for the comments. Very much appreciated. There's a lot to think about and respond to, and I should have time later today.
Thanks for the input, CreationBear and Bryan. And thanks, Bryan, for starting this thread—in my opinion, it deserves more traffic than it seems to get.
CreationBear: your thoughts re: scale and...
Nice images so far. Vaughn: how much of those images is light leaks, etc, versus intentional in-camera manipulation?
Philip U.: My idea of fun, anyway. I gravitate toward black cases in thrift...

I'll start. I have a modest collection of cameras, mostly 135, mostly purchased from thrift stores and junk shops for less than $20. No amazing finds, just a few curiosities. I've run a roll or two...
Got through about 50 sheets last month, all ~30 minutes drive from home (or less). Narrowed it to eight I think have the most potential, and then picked one.
Side note: For purposes of critique,...

Knobs: I've been 3D printing them, designed in SketchUp and printed from various filaments (nylon, copolyester, polycarbonate). Then using a soldering iron to press in a brass threaded insert (from...

I wouldn't call myself a carbon fiber expert, but I have built a camera incorporating parts milled from CF (mostly 2, 3, and 4mm panels):

New scans look much better, thanks to Ken's tips. Plus, scanning at 2400 dpi means less thumb-twidling waiting for scan to finish. Only problem: now I've got 20 or 30 'decent' negatives I need to...

Posted an earlier version of this in the Landscapes thread a few weeks ago. Went back yesterday evening and rephotographed the scene in vertical orientation with circular polarizer rather than red...
Thanks, Larry and Tin Can--exactly what I was looking for. Ken Lee's scanning tips look great, and I'll try that today. On the plus side, I typically have fewer black dust spots and lint than white...
I've been taking large format pictures for about two months now, using a DIY 4X5. At this point, I've shot and scanned 80 sheets or so, still very much on the steep slope of the learning curve.

Listened to this a few times since you recommended. Much brighter and melodic that I was expecting--reminds me a little of Copland, which is not a criticism. For some reason, I was expecting more...

Hi Steven,
Your razor sharp focus and DOF tends to keep the middle ground on the same plane as the foreground. Atmospheric perspective and the softness of the clouds creates a nice backdrop—however,...
