    Depend on the camera and age. Some cameras built before the 1930's put the glass with the frosted side facing away from the lens.

    Simplest way is to take a 7 x 17 camera and add masks to both side of the back . Or mask off the ground glass and take a 17 inch image it would give you 3 inches of wiggle room when printing.

    The number were put there in the manufacturing of the parts so the matched sets could be matched back up to each other after they go through all the manufacturing processing.
