I've seen some mention of using medical film holders, but the xray film holders I've seen don't use dark slides - since they're for x-ray use, they just use a low density face & just shoot through...

[QUOTE=Westerman;1371552]Here is my newest camera acquisition. I think it's a homemade 8x10 camera. I may need to improve the mount for the front standard to be more stable and give me more...
I believe the way it works is that one side is right-handed, the other is left-handed, so turning the nut in one direction tightens (or loosens) both sides at once.
Great idea - I'll keep an eye out for some plates. Jac, the SurplusShed glass is perfect - just need to figure out if I want to buy 20 12x12" sheets, I'm sure I'd never need to buy any more after...
Does anyone have a good source for thin glass for making ground glass?
For some cameras, the ground glass needs to be pretty thin - about 1.25mm, or .050". Some years ago I bought replacement...
This is great stuff - thanks all, I'll post any results I have (things are getting busy lately, but I'll try to keep some momentum on this) - please post any results you have too.
Thanks!
Well, that gives me a bit more info go on, thanks. I'm curious about some black Teflon sheet from McMaster-Carr, I may have to check that out.
Thanks for the link Peter, I'll check it out - but I'm actually looking forward to a DIY method.
I have an old 6½x6½ Packard shutter with a broken blade. I'm assuming I can find a thin plastic material on the McMaster-Carr site, but thought I'd see if anyone has advice first.
Has anyone...
+1 for repurposing bags. A few years ago Bob Fowler found some great rolling bags in an art shop for something like $60/ea. I believe they were meant for carrying artist supplies, but they were a...
Hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it may be a combination of the chrome being worn down to the brass in some places, other spots like the lensboard may be nicotine build up. A lot of...
I've been thinking about this too so after reading your post I looked around on the web.
I didn't find what I was looking for but these are interesting:...
If you haven't found it already, the graflex.org site is good for all Graflex & press camera info.
Jody - it looks like a 5x7 with a 5x7 back from an 8x10 "adapted" (guessing at the film size, but something like that) ... yeah, not the prettiest solution. If nothing's really messed up maybe you...
I wonder if Tim Rudman's book "Photographer's Master Printing Course" affects this term - after all, if you've taken the Master Printing Course you'd be a Master Printer right? :)
$624.00 + $52.00 shipping ... $676 for a contact frame. I just don't get it.
Must be a pleasant surprise for the seller though :)
Yep, a little simulated wear works wonders on pricing. They've done it for years with jeans, and "relic" guitars (even though they're often just brand new imports) cost more than shiny new...
Heck, for that mark up I can just buy 'em new from FreeStyle and sell 'em on eBay.
Well, that goes to show that those guys putting crazy high prices on "rare" items aren't all nuts, I guess.
What is going on here? Is there something about this contact frame I'm missing?

It's seems to be real project, but that is definitely an "artists representation" of the camera. Think about it, are you really going to hook a 10" diameter rubber air hose to that shutter? :) ...
Robbie, can you tell us more about the back? Did you fab that up yourself? I like the way the back is flush and the springs don't take up any extra room - did you make the springs or are they...
[QUOTE=michael slade;800446]Shot my dad on his 75th b-day. I thought it was fitting that I shoot it on the 7x5 camera.
Ha! I guess he'd only be 57 in the U.S. then :)
I don't have any info on these, but the date info that sellers give is very often taken from patent numbers which aren't very useful for date of manufacture.
I don't know about that porn name formula, but it reminded me of Tom Waits: "...All the doughnuts have names that sound like prostitutes..." (9TH & HENNEPIN).
Maybe you should just go to the...
Swiffer sweeper dry cloths ... excellent for de-dusting gear. Works well to clean light traps on film holders too.
Turtle Wax Leather Cleaner & Conditioner: works great for bellows. Not sticky -...
As I recall, Jim Galli did some tests like this using a standard Velostigmat & adding extra space between the elements. Darned if I can find that thread now though.

The later Polaroid cameras ... plastic horizontal ones where the exposed film comes out the front ... have a very nice front surface mirror. I've fixed a few TLR's with those mirrors. Usually have...
The main thing for any of these methods is to make sure the board is clamped down tightly - even more important if you're using a hand drill or Dremel. If you're using the hand drill or Dremel you...
Was that 'to' really supposed to be there? ... in a question to this forum?
I can understand it if you meant "switch film and paper" though
Hi John, I'm not familiar with that particular camera, but it would have taken some sort of holder whether film or glass plate. It would probably help if you posted some photos of it, particularly...
You could not buy one that had a recent CLA and recalibration. Keep in mind that ALL of these shutters are old, and all of them will need a CLA.
You can however buy one that has not been cleaned...
Another vote for Paul Ebel for the graphex shutter. Here's his contact info:

He'll probably be able to fix it up for a very...
I like the idea, but I agree that the Lounge fills that niche adequately. Any attempt to do otherwise will obviously cause a rift in the community, and since this is a LF forum after all there's...
I thought it was a thumb print. What's an interference pattern?
That camera would have originally come with a fresnel lens, so my guess is you have a replacement GG without the fresnel, and it's not up to snuff.
If you search for "graflex +(fresnel)" in ebay...
Is there a thumb print on the left side? I just zoomed in and, though blurry at that size, it seems as though there are some odd concentric lines there. No? Then I'll have to go with the...
I can't answer that question but I'd like to know the answer, and will extend it a bit further: is there a difference between the rails of the 5x7 vs 8x10?
Just to play devil's advocate: if you can't fold the bed up is it really that much smaller or lighter than a Crown Graphic? (I realize that that it's lighter than a Speed, but the Crown doesn't...
