Robert, both shots were taken at f/11. I will primarily use the Heliar because of the more pronounced out-of-focus areas. I've learned that for handheld use the out-of-focus bits are inevitable, so...

Sorry Kevin that was pretty obtuse. I tend to yada yada over details these days. I should state up front that I processed the Heliar image to roughly match the contrast from the Xenar. The Heliar is...
Hi all,
I recently replaced the 135mm 4.7 Xenar on my Crown Graphic Special with a 135mm 4.5 Heliar, and I made one set of comparison shots to share. These were taken at close distance at f/11,...
Its hard to beat the high mountains in July. If you are in to car camping, backpacking, or 5-10 mi. day hikes I'd recommend the E side of the Sangre de Cristo. Its about a 1.5-2 hr. drive, and if...
[QUOTE=Pere Casals;1342384]You can scan 16 bits... until 3.0D V750 has a perfect color discrimination..QUOTE]
Theoretically. Add in a plastic lens, cheap stepper motor, etc. etc. and reality is...
Its an even bigger loss of information with inferior hardware. I have an area on film that is 3 pixels. The high-end flatbed measures [(4,4,4) (4,4,5) (4,4,6)] whereas the Epson measures [(4,4,4)...
Its not all matrix transformations (software). The information in the original matrix that is to be transformed (hardware) is very, very important.
I disagree w/ Pere as no amount of post could achieve the same tonality and color with the Cezanne. This should not be surprising as we are comparing a unit with a plastic lens, fixed focus and a...
An 8x10 and an Epson is a powerful combination. That said, my Cezanne smokes my Epson 4990.
My first impression when comparing the two was that the Epson scans using default software and medium...
Don't overlook the Meridian 45b which is a nice Linhof style camera. Why an Anniversary? I'd go for a Pacemaker. The 1/1000 and 1/500 settings are useful for handheld wide aperture work. Either are...
I was wrong w.r.t. QTR working with the newest epson models. See https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/QuadtoneRIP/conversations/topics/13448
The cone/mis inkset availability for these printers...
Tim, yes I was originally referring to that statement, as well as statemets referring to Roy Harrington having trouble obtaining access codes for QTR.
Will we? The printer manufacturers have to be open to an inexpensive 3rd party RIP as well as 3rd party inks. The first is easier for the companies to concede since that does not impact the ink...
Ken, I think the p600 and p800 printers are now driveable with QTR, but my Epson 3880 leaves pizza wheel marks and I need a printer with a vaccum back. No new 24" or 48" model is supported. And Epson...
So, where is the new hope after the empire has struck back? I have been researching 24" printers with the aim of top notch B&W printing via an all grey inkset and the future looks grim. Epson has...
The E6 party isn't over yet. The cover charge is pretty steep, though. Provia and Velvia 100 are available, and I believe Velvia 50 can still be purchased from Japan. All are excellent films when...
Yes, very well deserved. Congrats Kirk.
Outstanding Mark! Your pixies are some of my favorite pictures on this site. Truly a great body of work.
I really enjoyed this Ian.
I modified mine. Used with infinity stops, it works fine. The stops ensure neutral swing for most situations, and the standard lockdown secures everything in place when using swing. Swing though is...
One of my favorite shooting setups is a 4x5 speed graphic with a 7.25" verito attached and calibrated to the rangefinger. I scan the negatives and print them on an inkjet, on matte papers. The effect...
I really like hot press natural for the aforementioned reasons. I will add that its cost is lower than most, if not all, high quality papers, and you can use ultra premium matte paper for proofing.
Beautiful segment, Kirk. Wide open spaces, with clouds.
That should be useful. I have generally given up on P99 as a platen material because it degrades over time and differs from batch to batch. I'm currently using Epson 4990 holders on top of the P99...
The density range of a b&w negative is low enough that any scanner should be a able to deal with it. The Nikon may function somewhat similar to a condensor enlarger with a greater Callier effect,...
The guy I bought my Cezanne from said he tested it against a Howtek 4500 and found it very similar in Dmax. A newer drum scanner will be superior, and when you get that perfect-but-dark velvia shot,...
+1 for the Mayo Clinic site. Their back exercises have greatly helped with some back issues.
Atlantaterry expressed my sentiments perfectly. The Yankee tank works well as a drying rack but not much else. When I obtained a very good scanner (Screen Cezanne) I noticed uneven development with...
Congrats Maris! I thoroughly enjoyed the article and your photographs.
Have you cleaned the purge pads for the maintenance cartridge? Excess ink on the pads may be getting onto the head, and thus the print. A google search should produce a video on how to clean the pads.
Thanks all for the encouragement. Bill, I typically set the Verito at f/5.6, with shutter speeds around 1/500 to 1/1000 with ASA 400 film. I use the focal plane shutter on my Pacemaker Speed Graphic....
Hi all,
I will be exhibiting eight 16x20 photographs in a show at the Niza Knoll Gallery from March 6 to April 18, 915 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO. The show is titled "Through a Different Lens"...
Beautiful shots Peter! Are you using natural (window?) or artificial lighting? I really like the horizontal framing and inclusion of the arm or shoulder.
Another vote here for seeing a podiatrist. I was unable to hike more than a few miles before getting fitted for orthotics. The problem was knee-based, not planar fasciitis, but the orthotics has made...
Nice shots, Alex and Deval!
Great shot Austin!
I stripped the rangefinder from a Meridian 4x5 many years ago, thinking that I would never use it. That was the dumbest mistake I ever made with large format. Your shooting style will probably change...
Nice series skier4life! The second one has a wonderful flow from foreground to background.
My take is that someone who makes a statement like this is one with no curiosity, or willingness to learn. Sad, really. I recently started studying Chinese painting, and at first glance every work...
Took this in May 2013 at Valley of the Gods, UT. I was all set up to photograph something else at nautical twilight when one of those pink clouds lit up Rooster Butte and Setting Hen Butte. I quickly...
