  1. Re: Suggestions for dark cloth or other light excluding device for Horseman L-frame

I suspect making my own hood as mentioned above is the best idea. It might cost more than $15 cuz we have no sewing machine and I'd have to hire out the stitching, but it would at least be light...
  2. Re: Suggestions for dark cloth or other light excluding device for Horseman L-frame

What a great idea, going outdoors! :o
  3. Re: Suggestions for dark cloth or other light excluding device for Horseman L-frame

Enough with the white and black cloth.....you need a waterproof focusing hood? What, a plumbing leak in your studio :). Although I can see how the waterproof feature might be useful for light...
  4. Suggestions for dark cloth or other light excluding device for Horseman L-frame

    Hi,

My old dark cloth is kaput (light leaks even) and I'm wondering if there is anything knew and wonderful in the area of devices that allow one to actually see the ground glass, even in bright...
  5. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

You just made my (cloudy) day. When next in Cabela's i do believe I'll pick one of these up. Room for just about everything I need for large-format work, including a spot meter. Much easier to...
  6. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

The pinnacle of Yankee engineering, Bruce :).
  7. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

    Dudes,

What great suggestions, all. Nothing like tapping into the combined experience of dozens (hundreds?) of photographers. Husky tool bags.....I have one for home tools, why didn't I think of...
  8. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

Those ziplock bags are great in more ways than one. In colder weather, one can bring film and lenses back inside to the warmth without worrying about condensation. When you live in Maine, ziplock...
  9. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

That's a good note, Dan. The little insert I discussed above is very plain and fits nicely out of sight into any pack. I dislike camera packs that are emblazoned with logos that say "STEAL ME."
  10. Re: Pulled the trigger on a Speed Graphic now need some help

    Jon,

Looks to be in decent shape. When you receive the item you will notice two things: first the bed is a "drop" style, i.e., the front hinged "door" drops down to get it out of the way of...
  11. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

Another great beer cooler idea :), Thanks.

I was just poking around in my studio closet and discovered a small camera bag that came with my Fuji X-E1, and which I only use occasionally if I'm...
  12. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

I thought of building such a box. It would certainly be protective, however my Horseman already fits into a plywood box that probably weighs more than the camera :). I was hoping for something a...
  13. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

Might you suggest such an animal? Thanks, BAB
  14. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

Good idea, however I might prefer something where the lenses wouldn't be stacked, and which could be carried separate from my backpack. Good idea, though. Especially the waterproof stuff sacks....
  15. Re: In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

I've thought about something like that -- perhaps a padded cooler for beer :).
  16. In what do you carry 4x5 lenses when in the field?

    Hi,

Looking for something usable to carry 4x5 lenses when out and about. Mine are mounted on Horseman/Sinar lens boards, and I currently carry them either in an old brief case or wrapped in...
  17. Re: Anybody using Network Attached Storage / RAID Arrays for their files?

I thought this thread was a reply to one I started earlier. Sorry for the confusion on my part. The off-site hard drives are rotated into use every month or two. If I were doing a good business in...
  18. Re: Anybody using Network Attached Storage / RAID Arrays for their files?

Thanks. I think. I just have one small question. While raid products have come down below the 1 kilobuck range, why would I spend that kind of money for something that sits in my house? My...

Re: So. What do you do with 1megabyte files?

I'm not so sure about the cloud being everyone's future. Adobe's very own super safe cloud was severely hacked not long ago. And on another forum I cautioned individuals not to store their...

Re: So. What do you do with 1megabyte files?

Great idea, except I'm retired and don't want the expense. Also, I once started to buy a Carbonite subscription until I noticed they'd dramatically increased the price. Too, although this is a bit...

Re: So. What do you do with 1megabyte files?

I have a reluctance to using DVDs, even the JVC 100 year variety. At 3.7 gb, that's only three scans per disc at 3800ppi. For $100 or a bit more I can buy a portable hard drive that will store...

Re: So. What do you do with 1megabyte files?

Thanks, Peter. I do, indeed, store off site. Currently I have enough space on computer, desk top drive, but I'm going to be squeezed soon on the off-site portables. I'll just have to address that...

Re: So. What do you do with 1megabyte files?

    Thank, Paul,
That makes sense, and as I think about it gives me two options.

First I can have the scans done at around 3800 and save that scan on a second hard drive; then downsize to 1600 and...

Re: So. What do you do with 1megabyte files?

I meant 1000mb or a gigabyte. Sorry. (Or duh.) The most dense scan I have is at 3800ppi, with a file a bit over 1gig. I'm wondering what resolution is really necessary for, say, a 16x20 print.

So. What do you do with 1megabyte files?

I've always loved large-format images, and making same. Just using a real camera is a treat, and seeing the detail and sharp transitions in resulting images is more than satisfying. Then I had some...
  28. Re: Ever fixed a collar type leg-lock on a Giottos tripod?

    Good, thanks!
  29. Re: Ever fixed a collar type leg-lock on a Giottos tripod?

Thanks, Bob. I finally just unscrewed the collar -- LOTS of threads -- and discovered the internal slide had somehow become twisted, locking the leg section. Had to really pull to remove the...
  30. Ever fixed a collar type leg-lock on a Giottos tripod?

My favorite light weight Giottos has a stuck leg. It's a collar-type rotating lock. The model number is MT 9251. I haven't the slightest idea how to remove the collar so any help would be much...

Re: Need nylon bushings for a shift lens

Thanks, Randy. I'll try McMaster but there are no watchmakers in Maine, and these are too big for most watch repair facilities. However, I noticed a clock repairman not long ago in another town and...

Cable release for a recessed lens board?

    Hi,

I have a Nikon 65mm lens mounted on a recessed Sinar/Horseman plate, and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get a cable release attached to the lens. I even have a rotating elbow...

Need nylon bushings for a shift lens

Hi, I know this is a large format forum, but I've had some great help here before in finding parts and lubricants, etc. I recently purchased a Pentax 28mm f/3.5 shift lens (from this forum actually)...
  36. Re: Help! In need of 5mm diameter solid nylon 66 or Delrin tubing!

I'm not really sure, Leigh, about the tolerances. All I have to go in is an exploded diagram listing parts numbers from Arca Swiss. Tolerances aren't listed. I suspect I could measure the narrower...
  37. Re: Help! I need 5mm diameter solid nylon rod!

Very true, Denney :). But the opening line in the thread states I live in the U.S. Cheers, Bruce B
  38. Re: Help! In need of 5mm diameter solid nylon 66 or Delrin tubing!

No I sure don't, Evan. I was hoping to find the right size, or similar. Bernice might be right about 3/16", but I'd like to start with something a bit thicker if I can find it.

  39. Re: Help! I need 5mm diameter solid nylon rod!

The thread starter clearly states I live in the U.S. Any reference to local suppliers could be accessed from any in the country, I'm assuming.

Speaking of politeness, how about an apology for...
