I put together a very inexpensive digital 3D rig with two Canon A4000IS cameras running CHDK and synced with a DIY USB cable release. I’m really happy with the results — happier, in fact, than with...
Thank you so much for the very kind words and advice Merg. I really appreciate them.
I've decided to prepare two 11x14 portfolio boxes of my best work, printed in 8x10 and window matted, and...
There are quite a few asian supermarkets in Sacramento. A frozen octopus is ~$10.
I meant to take two double-exposures, and instead took a single quadruple-exposure. It's almost certainly better than the two double-exposures works have been. Minolta XD11 with a 58mm f/1.4 lens...
I'm lucky: the local photography club/gallery appears to offer biweekly print nights and irregular portfolio reviews:

Here's an octopus lumen print. This was a 2-3 hour exposure on 16x20 Ilford Warmtone RC paper, which I fixed and toned in selenium. Unlike the squid diptych above, these colors are "real".

Here are two different versions of a squid lumen diptych.
1. This first version with psychedelic colors is a scan of the paper (expired Kodak Ultra Endura 8x10 color paper), still warm from the...
Indeed, we have a photography club/gallery that I haven't joined and an active arts district with at least a dozen galleries.
I also honestly didn't know that there were online "Call for artists"...
Fantastic advice, thanks all. I appreciate it a great deal.

All,
What is the current best practice for presenting one's portfolio to local galleries for potential sale, local shows for inclusion, or local clubs for discussion?
I'm not comfortable...
11x15 Cyanotype with a tape-transfer overlay. A fun accident, but it matches the subject's personality (and educational background)...
For what it's worth, this $5.99 book is concise, well-written, and will definitely get you in the right direction.

Brandon, I love your work and this shot especially. Well done.

I was pretty happy with this one. Minolta SRT-101 w/ the 58mm f/1.4 lens. Old Tri-X developed in fresh Xtol.

Works great, has for years, and probably will keep doing so for a few more.
I use a 125mm and 210mm for my shoots. A 360mm would be way long and difficult to work with, in my humble opinion. This is double-true if you and/or the model are inexperienced.

Table Mountain near Oroville is *highly* recommended, but it does get very crowded on weekends during peak bloom.

Jac, I'd love to see those shots!
If anyone is curious, the author is selling the books directly from his website:

Dang, I wish I had known about this Kickstarter. I'd love a copy of that book.
Totally correct decision to have jumped when you saw one available. It took me almost two months to find mine (on eBay.de actually).
I've done a fair bit of hiking with a Tiltall. It's not light, but it strapped well onto my backpack and allowed me to shoot with a full RZ67 kit on some rough terrain.
Toyo VX125?
Lund Photographics also modifies holders. I haven't used mine yet, but it was quick, the price was right, and it seems nice.

@Austin: I love the squirrel shot.
They changed their listing -- it used to be listed as a "Sinar" brand.
I'm getting more and more tempted to buy one or an alternative head, since I've had a hard time finding the genuine article.
I've wanted to buy one of the Zeiss Diaphots just for the coolness factor. Such a neat little piece of kit!
Edit: Dang it, I just bought one. ;-)
Uncertainty over the future of our materials (equipment and film) is sort of inherent to film photography now. If you only want 100% new, manufacturer-supported gear, may I suggest digital?...
Your budget is quite feasible. I started with a nice Calumet View Camera for $80, a Tiltall tripod for $50, a Fujinon-NW 210mm f/5.6 lens for ~$150. My loupe was from Harbor Freight, and was maybe...
Jiminy Cricket, that's a fine setup.
I haven't tested my new darkslides with film, but I can no longer shine a flashlight through them. That's good at least.
They've definitely got the Toyo stink!
I use a toy set of goggles. I think I paid $25 for them. They work great, and I have yet to notice any fogging during tray development.

Taking wonderful pictures of my children has led to my wife encouraging my photography and getting her to agree to expensive purchases. *grin* And don't forget the maternity shots!
