Terrific interview Thom and wonderful work.
My elderly Kodak Duraflex development trays, originally my father's, are ready to be retired. I'm looking at several options and found the Cescolite dimple-bottom trays interesting. They are more...
Hasselblad 501CM, Carl Zeiss Planar f/3.5 100 mm CF, Ilford FP4+
Hidden in the dark recesses of a small farm building, I wondered who may have sat in one of these chairs after a long day working...

Well done Rod. The Arca-Swiss equipment you've sold me over the years has always exceeded my expectations for top notch craftsmanship and quality customer service. My 4x5 F-Field w/Micro-Orbix is the...
I recently became aware of a photographer named Bevan Davies. A couple of references I read indicates he photographed with an 8x10. Nazraeli Press quotes Joshua Chuang from the introduction to...
Lots of things for me to consider. Thanks much for the comments and suggestions.
Are D-23 or Ilford DD-X compensating developers, such as Kodak HC-110 or Rodinal?
I want to experiment with diluted developer (low energy) and extended development times for scenes/subjects with...
Nay. My Beseler 3 lens turret works like a champ and is precise when rotating from lens to lens. If Beseler can't answer your questions, try contacting SK Grimes.
Terrific idea Keith. I may follow your lead with my grandkids.
Like you Michael, I often look through Citret's monographs.
Thanks for the links Oren. Like you, I wish I participated in one of his workshops.
I recently acquired a copy of the book by Al Weber titled: Advice for Photographers: The Next Step.
In the spirit of full disclosure I didn't become aware of Mr. Weber until I read his...
I am an unabashed fan of Richard Misrach's work and this article helps me better understand the genesis of these particular images. Thank you for sharing.
I 100% concur with your comment Michael about Mark Citret's prints. Before COVID, I had the opportunity to speak with Mark about his use of Rodinal and, noting that the original Rodinal was no longer...
Earlier this year, I bought Adox Rodinal from Freestyle and they shipped it to me via ground shipping. The fact that it did not fly on a plane wasn't noticeable to me. It arrived about as fast as I...
SK Grimes makes terrific lens caps from Delrin, PVC, and metal. While on the pricey side, ultimate in lens protection. B&H, Blue Moon Camera, eBay, etc all offer replacement lens caps for many of the...
Thank you for this reference Daniel. I've sent a few coins Amazon Prime's way and will watch it this evening.
While I'm not familiar with Shulman's "Architecural Photography Inside And Out", my humble home library has a copy of his book "Julius Shulman: Architecture and Its Photography". Wonderful book by...
I have 22 Toyo 4x5 film holders all purchased via Kumar. I just ordered six more from him. As far as I'm concerned, Toyo film holders are as good as it gets. I have had zero problems. Built to last....
Holy Smokes Daniel! My father would have drooled over such a LF rig. Amazing.
Thanks all for the kind comments, information, and suggestions. The one-and-only brick and mortar camera store in my area (Tempe Camera) has a good used camera section and often has used LF equipment...
I got of my lazy behind and did some additional 'Norma' research on LFPF and elsewhere. Somewhat embarrassed about my 'SYSTEM C KOCH' question. It seems every Norma has that engraved on the front...
I've been thinking about getting a Norma for some time. I don't believe I've actually seen one in the flesh, but this thread has me getting serious about acquisition. A few questions.
1. What is...
I have the 90/4.5/SW, 90/8 SW, & 75/4.5 SW. Of the three, the 90/8 SW is my very favorite and most often used wide angle lens for 4x5 work. The 90/4.5 SW is a terrific lens, but too much of a good...
I was recently gifted a sealed box of 320 TXP 4x5 with an expiration date of 09/2019. I’m told it was kept in a refrigerator since purchase, but not frozen. Thoughts on film condition?
In 2017, Christopher Barrett posted his set-up for floral photography work - https://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?29552-Flowers-Anyone&p=1384718&viewfull=1#post1384718...
After much thought and research on this issue, I'm going with the West System marine adhesive and epoxy for my sink. It takes longer, is more labor intensive, and requires more time (i.e. 7+ days) to...
I have and love both 4.5 and 8 lenses. For indoor architectural low light circumstances, as described by Drew, the 4.5 comes in very handy. Otherwise, the 8 can handle just about everything else....
As luck, or Instagram algorithms, would have it, I found this on my feed - https://www.instagram.com/p/CQfwtuUsuG9/
As the add says; "Simply apply SEMCO Liquid Membrane on wood, concrete, Tiles,...
Hey Doremus:
What chalk or sealing methodology did you employ where your sink bottom and sides are joined? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm assuming you did something "extra" to seal those...
A fellow LF photographer dropped by Tempe Camera today (Arizona) to purchase some fixer. He was told by one of their senior management folks that Kodak is getting out of the chemistry business. He...
That is why I do not presoak Ilford film and I've never had an issue after hundreds of rolls of 120 and countless sheets of 4x5. That being said, whatever works best for any photographers workflow....
I presoak Kodak films, and, like Andrew, I never presoaked Ilford films. This methodology has worked well for me.
My preference is to try and acquire the majority of silver gelatin prints from living artists. For example, I have a silver gelatin print from - in no particular order:
Mark Klett
Scott Baxter...
As some have already said; "it depends". My two favorites are the Nikkor SW 120mm f8 and Fujinon A 240mm f9 lenses. Both are excellent performers and have generous image circles that allows me lots...
Ben - my earlier comments are intended to convey my reaction, both positive and negative, to your videos. Based upon the laudatory comments you regularly receive when you post a new video, my...
I've had the good fortune of making photographs with a friends 8x10. Compared to my 4x5, I found it a superior experience. Don't get me wrong, I very much enjoy making photographs with my 4x5. But an...
I am serious nerd when it comes to my photography/darkroom record keeping. Each of my 4x5 negatives are stored in an Archival Methods clear "Polyester Interleaving Film Folder". Then each "Film...
Thanks much for this information Greg. Looks like you have a wonderful darkroom.
