12x20 is indeed cut in the other way (on the long side of 20x24) than 7x17 (on the short side of 14x17...),
and 4x10 is of course 8x10 cut in...

Just to add my grain of salt...

For "squarer" shooters like me who shoots 11x14, 7x17 is an interesting format because :

a- the camera is smaller...
b-the image circle needed to cover is the...

One relatively easy solution, though not necessairly the best for high resolution scanning, but more than enough for any web-based application, is to do a quick and dirty contact print on 5x7 photo...

My own solution to the "300mm-covering-11x14" problem is a Rodenstock Apo-Gerogon 300mm f9 process lens. It covers 11x14 and a little more, though misses the corners of 12x20, when wide-open...
