Re: Best 8x10 camera for ultra-wide angle?

Maybe some of the old tail board cameras. Nothing to get in the way forward of the lens board, and with some the rear standard can be moved pretty close. With the bellows compressed my old Ansco...

    Re: Re-Entry Strategy

Supply & demand - very little supply of new lenses now. I'm lucky in that a good friend is a skilled professional watchmaker. With lenses, as long as the glass is clean I'll buy a lens, and he's...

    Re: Re-Entry Strategy

I haven't noticed any problem mounting a heavy lens, but the heaviest lens that I have is a Fujinon SW 125mm f8 that's not used very often (my Intrepid is 5x7). For 4x5 I typically carry a 135mm f5.6...

    Re: Re-Entry Strategy

A new Intrepid 4x5 is about $390 right now (varies due to exchange rate).

New Intrepid, careful selection of a couple lenses, a few good film holders, and you're in business - no messing with a...

    Re: Re-Entry Strategy

I've been using a Patterson tank with the Mod54 holder. Works fine for me. Adequate and complete agitation is the key - continuous for 30 seconds at the start and full/complete inversions, but a...

    Re: Re-Entry Strategy

I have an Intrepid 5x7 and it's a great field camera that doesn't weigh me down and doesn't get in the way of making good photographs. With a careful and competent photographer it will make...

Re: Show us your "90 pound" pack

Seems pretty silly to me, especially with the equipment we have available now, not to mention the potential damage to one's body from carrying too much weight. Overweight people almost invariably...

Re: Acrylic 4x5 film drying rack recommended?

I've used wooden clothes pins for years - never an issue. There are so many products these days trying to solve problems that don't exist while thinning your wallet and thickening theirs.

Re: Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

Sekonic L208. Not a spot meter, but it does have an incident setting. Once I stack up some more pennies I'll probably get one of those Reveni Labs meters.

Re: Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

  14. Re: Intrepid 8 x 10.. Is the Fresnel on backwards?

I ordered a fresnel with my Intrepid 5x7 camera, and then removed it. Works better without it.

Re: Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

In most cases "light is right!" Enables one to concentrate on the art of photography, and less on the logistics of an overweight or over-complex setup.

Re: Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

The grams quickly add up to kilograms! That 300mm 5.6 probably weighs a lot - a Nikkor M 300mm f9 is much smaller and lighter an only about one stop slower. I don't know how much your 3d printed...

Re: Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

I have a similar camera with no movements. It has a 75mm Nikkor SW 75 f4.5. Weighs only a few pounds and I can shoot it handheld, monpod, or on a tripod with 4x5 or 6x12 roll film. I built it myself....

  24. Re: Tachihara Fiel Stand 45 Front Standard Rise/Fall Scale

Guess they wanted to end it on an even number. I never pay any attention either. I set it to zero when unfolding the camera, then move it up or down as needed.

Re: Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

Well said. I agree with you about the clearer vision by keeping it simple. I think that carrying too much stuff (complication and weight) stifles creativity.

Re: Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

LOL. It's a pretty simple formula: light camera combined with small light lenses. The rest is trying to minimize weight of the other accoutrements needed. If it's not helping you make the photograph...

Show us your sub-20-pound (9-kilogram) LF kit

Now that I'm past 60 with knees and feet that ache if I carry too much weight too far, I've been on a large format field kit weight reduction plan.

Below are photos of my current field kit. It...
  30. Re: Metal Field Camera: Toyo 45A, Horseman 45FA, or Wista 45?

I would suggest that for a field camera that must be carried far from the car, ditch the idea of a heavy metal camera and look at something like a Tachihara, Wista wood, or even an Intrepid (a new...
  31. Re: Metal Field Camera: Toyo 45A, Horseman 45FA, or Wista 45?

It seems that the OP might be relatively new to LF and I was suggesting that in a field camera that has to be carried any distance he/she should expand their thinking beyond the heavy metal cameras....

Re: Use of color head for VC printing

The instructions for your color head will probably have a table detailing VC filter settings for B & W printing.
  35. Re: Metal Field Camera: Toyo 45A, Horseman 45FA, or Wista 45?

I think some here like to brag about their 50# camera bags! Not me. Both my 5x7 and 4x5 kits each weigh about 10 pounds not counting the tripod.
  36. Re: Metal Field Camera: Toyo 45A, Horseman 45FA, or Wista 45?

Yes! I've always been a proponent of lightweight cameras and lenses. The OP mentioned that he doesn't need extreme movements. A lightweight camera might not have some "features" that might or might...
