Having been very sceptical about digital cameras in the past I still bought my very first DSLR (Canon 20D) some weeks ago. In fact this is my first AF and my first digital camera, so this acquisition...
Just bought 20 used Fidelity film holders and realized that 10 of them show the typical light leaks at the light trap where the dark slide enters the holder. As the holders look almost mint I guess...
Recently I compared the results from a drum scanner and an Imacon (both operated by a specialist) and the Epson 4870 (operated by myself). My conclusion was that up to a magnification ratio of about...
Grieger lab in Germany uses an 'Océ Lightjet 500 XL' for print sizes up to 180 x 360cm (70"x141") in one sheet. Costs start at app. 500 EUR/ 609 $ depending on how much effort is needed for the final...
Don’t know whether you look for a cost-no-object or for an economical solution but you should have a look at a process called Diasec. Essentially it is a special patented silicon rubber used to face...
Have the Minolta FM6 and I am very satisfied with it. Use it quite often in low light and never reached the sensitivity limits of the meter.
Would buy the Minolta again as I prefer its very...
In my opinion Bob Salomon has found a respectable way to have his business goals in mind and at the same time make real contributions to forums like this. Others could learn from this.
Just...
Would like to hear opinions on the technique of mounting prints on aluminum plates. I know of several photographers doing it and like the idea of using a pure material instead of plates made of...
It depends on the groundglas/ fresnel you use. For most fresnel screens a 7x magnification is too much, as you magnify the structure of it that much that you have problems to see the picture itself....
There are some agents specialized in transporting jewels, collector watches etc. internationally. Would try one of these. If I remember correctly the price is about 2-3 times higher than Fedex/UPS...
and you get a telescopic rail what is a nice feature indeed
All you gain with the GT is base tilt as the M offers only on axis tilt. The price you pay for this is much much more bulk.
In my opinion this makes only sense for studio use.
here are my own answers:
one lens 150mm
two lenses 110, 210
What are your preferred focal lengths assuming your are allowed to carry...
...one lens? two lenses? three lenses? four lenses? five lenses?
and a Nikkor-W 210 plasmat weighs 460g.
Eugene,
a Apo-Sironar-N 210 weighs only 440g. Would you give up the advantages of a plasmat for 155g?
If you plan to stay with only two lenses, I would agree that 200/210mm is a good focal length for supplementing the 110mm. Personally I prefer to use a 180mm and a 300mm.
Up to 210mm I would...
Agree that 2-3 EUR is the usual price for a 4x5 E-6/C-41 development. At least for the nearer future you should find a good pro lab in any big town in Western Europe.
Whatever lab you decide for...
Had the same question some time ago. According to the data sheets the Sironar-N MC and the Apo-Sironar-N are identical. The Apo-Sironar-S is of course a different design.
The full story can be...
The old PTI had some old fashioned charm. Since the new publisher took over it is only one more magazine rewriting press releases for their advertising clients.
Have Szarkowskis one volume Atget in my book shelf. Definitely one of the best books I know of.
I try to find writings exploring the connecting lines between Atget, Eggleston and todays...
Its a bit strange to compare one of the cheapest field cameras with one of the most expensive monorails. Even if the Discovery looks cheap at first sight, be aware that you will find almost no used...
Tim, couldn't agree more with what you said above. The older I get the more I get the opinion that everything relevant today goes back to Atget and Eggleston.
BTW do you know of current writers...
HERE is a great article on William Eggleston. One of the few sources showing the person behind the myth.
Enjoy
Plan to order the Horseman folding binocular viewer for my Linhof.
It looks like there is only one supplier offering a Linhof adapted version: Phootos from the Netherlands.
Does anyone know...
Janko,
could list some more LF shops in Europe, but none of them would be able to offer a price comparable to Badger or MPEX. Can recommend both shops from my own experience.
It looks like with...
Jean-Louis,
it is hard to see on the pic, but the compass includes in fact two instruments. A plain compass and a clinometer working according to the same principle as the "Acu Angel". I guess the...
By looking at the "Acu Angel" I realized that my compass offers the same clinometer function as an add on. It is a 'Ranger 15 TDCL' made by Silva (Sweden). You should get it in any shop for outdoor...
Just received a statement from Schneider. For the few who prefer to read in english I tried a summarized quick and dirty translation (sorry for my poor english!)
“…The effect discussed on the...
Have 5 Schneider lenses manufactured between 1983 and today and didn't experience any "Schneideritis" up to now.
Anyhow I have sent a link to this threat to Werner Bayer, head of customer service...
Recently I became aware of a foggy stripe about 20 mm wide on two out of twenty 4x5 slides processed in one batch.
The stripe is located on the opposite side of where the dark slide is removed...
Reading all the different opinions one could think Schneider had a serious problem with sample deviation. Never read that divergent opinions about a Symmar or other Schneider lenses. Is this maybe a...
The SA 121 is the predecessor of the SA 120. I tested both some weeks ago. The 121 had a very poor performance in the corners, the 120 was in all aspects excellent.
The SA 120 could be a perfect...
Need to make a 9x12cm film holder myself as my new Epson 4870 scanner comes only with a 4x5inch holder.
This should be an easy task if such a holder just needs to hold the film flat and ensure...
Spoke with Schneider in Germany:
They admitted that the wording in their brochure is a bit unclear. You can change the lens board for yourself but should not do that 'too often'. If you use the...
All meters with a selenium cell share a problem: They don't work in low light at all and loose their accuracy already below about EV 8/9.
If I would need to settle on only one meter in your price...
Robert, I share your confusion. That's why I posted this question...
Contemplate about buying a Schneider Super Symmar 110XL. In the German Schneider brochure it is stated that the lens should not be unscrewed from the shutter as this could easily cause misalignements...
What is about the Rodenstock APO-Macro-Sironar 120mm/5.6? At 1:1 the image circle is 277mm (f/8) compared to 210mm (f/5.6) with the Nikkor-AM (data for the same f-stop were not available).
Of...
Ok, but coming back to my original question: Don't you discover some dirt residues on the blades after successfully completing the shutter wash?
Is this just unavoidable or what is my mistake?
