Re: My Plans for Combiplan Developing Tanks

I have used the Combiplan for thousands of sheets of film. They work better than any other system I have used. My only advice is to be extremely careful with the top clips. They break easily. So...

Re: Help w/ Toyo 45A Front Shift, please

Loosen the two knobs on the side of the front standard. This will allow you to shift the lensboard up and down within the rails of the standard. No need to loosen the extension bed.

Re: Lpl 4500 focus is locked or just stiff

You may need to replace the focusing gear set. LPL sells it as a kit for the 6700 series enlarger.

Re: enlarging / printing - am I missing out?

Not quite what I meant Leigh. The image I create with a negative in my darkroom is not a secondary image. It is a primary image made from the subject - which is the negative. I do not see it as a...

Re: enlarging / printing - am I missing out?

The difference for me is that a digital print is a reproduction of an image captured by pixels and translated by software to ink. Whereas a darkroom print is the actual product of a photochemical...

Re: Period lens suggestions for 1915-ish 8x10?

It depends on the look you are seeking. Rapid Rectilinears and even Petzvals (Wollensak made improved ones), render and excellnt look to out-of-focus areas. But Tessars can be nice in that regard...

Tape for Toyo-View cut film holder hinge

I need to replace the tape on some Toyo-View 4x5 holders. It looks like Toyo used some kind of synthetic fiber tape or cloth to affix the hinges. Ordinary sticky tape doesn't hold up at higher temps....

Re: Is photography a form of "hoarding"?

I don't think it is a form of hoarding, but there are obsessive-compulsive photographers and equipment gatherers. I wouldn't want to conflate "taking" a photograph with possession. Otherwise "taking...

Repair of Toyo-View 4x5 holder possible?

I emailed them to get some clarification on developers and toners. But they have not responded. They are off to a really bad start. Maybe Kickstart should revert to Kickass in this case.

Re: Pictorialism - Soft focus and alternate processes

Artistic genres do not come back. Do you know any art history? The only attempt at that was the pre-Raphaelites, and they based their work on a philosophical approach to art, not mere style. What you...

Re: Pictorialism - Soft focus and alternate processes

Pictorialism was an inseparable product of its time and sensibility. I have seen a lot of soft-focus work from recent decades, but it is all nostalgic kitsch. Art moves forward.

Wow. The second print does not work for me as a photograph. As graphic art though, it is strong. Perhaps if you lightened the sky somewhat it would work as the former?

Re: One lens - artistic zen or a limiting frustration

Re: So how do I describe this subject genre?

Sculptural details, sculptural elements, deconstructed sculpture, elements of a sculpture. This way you give the work of art credit as whole, but also note that you are showing only parts of it.
