I'm still struggling to frame my shots accurately without a viewfinder. I think I need to use this camera more often to be able sort it out.

Morell and Klett (and probably others) have done better versions of this shot, but I still had to try.

That's a beauty, Ken.

I walked right past this Breslin dealership yesterday afternoon. Nice shot and perfect exposure. I keep meaning to get out for more nocturnal images myself. Now is the perfect time of year for it.

For the record the Kodak 2D 8x10 back has spring-loaded slots for both 5x8 and 4x10 splitter panels. I haven't made any yet, but it looks pretty easy to do.

I'm thinking I should do a proper macro shot of the fractured glass; it's very jewel-like and kaleidoscopic. The image of it above was made on a horribly crappy point-and-shoot (that I won in a...
Thanks very much. Yeah, that fractured lens is nuts, but I had fun trying it out. Since I only paid $10 for it I think I've already gotten my money's worth. The image above was taken with a 6.5" B&L...
Yep, it gives the bellows a little reinforcement against sagging in the front. Mine is covered in a felt-like cloth and still works well with firm "spring" action. Never thought to remove it, though....
Color-coded lens boards. Could be a new trend!

Vincent,
I think if Jim were selling this lens he would manage to talk up the many 'improvements' that time and its previous owners have wrought and ask a premium for it! ;)
I hope to take it...

Thanks. I have to say I was surprised by the result. The image on the ground glass was very dim and hard to focus, but it worked out in the end.

So a month or two ago I bought the lens pictured below. It is, hands down, the most damaged lens I have ever encountered. The entire front element is cracked through, as though someone boiled it in a...
It's nice to see these large; lots of detail to marvel at. That first one threw me as I scrolled down, and down, and down.... That must have been some front rise you used.

Is the lesson here to keep your portable refreshments out of your photos? If so, point taken. ;)
J.
Indeed. I don't know if I've ever thought, "This photo would have been better if I'd had better gear." But I have often thought, "This photo would have been better if I were a better photographer."

Lately, without really setting out to do so, I have been shooting many images in the 1:2 - 1:1 range on 4x5. Mainly to accommodate the bellows extension needed I have been using an uncoated, pre-WWII...

I would extend the analogy this way:
Shooting a found scene is like improvising from a musical score. Arranging objects (or people), backdrops, and lighting is like writing an original score from...
Beautiful, Harley. I love the repeating shapes, from the small rock in the foreground all the way up to the clouds. When I lived in L.A. I used to drive to Lone Pine all the time. My wife and I would...
Thanks, Harley. I'm not sure if anyone else suffers from this (I know Ken has talked about it), but sometimes I am able to make a more successful photograph in pre-existing lighting conditions--in...
Thank you.
