The common problem with the SSXL80 is actually not Schneideritis (peeling of the black paint inside the lens) but an opaque film that forms on one of the inner elements.
I had sent it back for the problem that commonly affects the SSXL80's, namely, haze on one of the inner elements.
I sent my Schneider SSLX80 back to Badger Graphics for repair and they sent me back a brand new lens. Has anyone else had this experience?
Prashant,
Your take in photographers is very good. I have converted your links to active links:

here's the English version.
I've noticed haze around the edge of one of the elements of my SSXL80 as well. I've been waiting until the fall foliage season is over before I ship it out.
So, where should I send it? Back to...

Apparently, he is a LF photographer whose name hasn't showed up yet on this forum.
Enjoy.
I don't see where the book is available at the website?

I shut down my wet darkroom a few months ago because I was spending too much time in it and my little daughter was knocking on the door for her daddy to come out. Yes, I definitely lost something in...
Kerry,
I shoot 4x5, not 8x10, so I don't intend to take the 480mm lens out into the field. I am looking for one to replace the Fujinon 450C that I used to use for portraits, but found it just...
I like the Schneider 480mm Apo-Artar lens, but for the past year I haven't seen any turn up on ebay or at Midwest Photo. Lens and Repro always has one for sale, but the price is around $1700, which...

I am planning to upgrade my PC in order make Photoshop work better (ie, faster).
For those that know: what video card does your computer have in it, and how well does it work for you?
Kerry,
I bought the SSXL80 after renting the SAXL72 (75?) from Lens and Repro. From my test shots, the Symmar made rocks and tree trunks look a lot better to me. This may seem like a stupid...
Does anybody know who sells the Shen-Hao TFC45 (the Ebony SW45 knock-off) in the United States?
I run Windows XP Home 2002 edition on my PC and the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer won't open 16-bit grayscale or 48-bit color files from my scanner. Photoshop has no problem with them. Why is...
The lens is the SSXL80.
The affected element seems to be the second from the front, so it is not accessible to me.
I notice my relatively new Schneider lens is forming a whitish haze on one of the internal elements. Currently, it is only on the outer one-third of the lens, but it seems to be slowly encroaching...

There's a great article by Kerry Thalmann in View Camera this month. Usually light fall-off becomes noticable on slide films when you get below the 90mm focal length, except with the Super Symmar XL...
Maybe I should get my copy back. I bought it on amazon.com, read it in one night, decided the guy was a flake and gave it away to my friend. I guess I missed something in the book...
I bought a lens from them a few years ago and I agree, their rating system is unique, to say the least.
Why don't manufacturers of wide angle lens just incorporate the center filter into the lens? Is the exposure change the only problem? Or are there other reasons?
I am planning to buy a 210mm lens for my 4X5 system which I use for both portaits and landscapes. I want the sharpest possible lens; coverage is not an issue.
The usual opinions on this topic...
It's funny, I expected a bunch of "buy Wisner" responses. I really never even considered the Canhams. What's so special about them? After all, they are about 4 times the price of the Shen-hao (at...
Alan,
Email me a price at symaz2@yahoo.com. I also live in the NY area.
I'm planning on purchasing a Shen-hao field camera to replace my monorail. Now, I've always heard, "Buy American" to support the economy or something. While I don't really concern myself too much...
The Arca Swiss models are a lot more expensive than the Shen-Hao...
For that kind of money, I could buy the top of the line Toyo field camera.
I'd be willing to pay more for a sturdier model of the Toyo if there were some advantage in sticking with Toyo. For instance, maybe I can avoid mounting and unmounting the lens from the lensboard...
I usually use a 80mm lens, though I've considered buying a 58mm lens as well. I use a bag bellows on my monorail, which I can also use with my 150mm lens without having to change to the standard...
This is a slight departure from the usual Shen-hao versus Ebony question. I am thinking about buying a field camera, but not for the usual reason-weight. I actually don't mind carrying my Toyo...
Funny. But sadly no, they're not mine. I am thinking about bidding on one of them, but the price is kind of high. I don't really need another one, but it's kind of an obsession. Blame Bob Fowler,...
I notice there are currently three Toyo D45M's for sale on ebay, and there have been several others for sale in recent months. Prior to this, you almost never saw one available (I always watch since...
Bob, I stand corrected.
Don, when you say the adapter ring for the polarizer causes vignetting, is that with it on top of 2 filter holder slots? I notice that my wide angle lens only vignettes...
Don, Really? so even the 105mm ring doesn't prevent vignetting?
I guess what I'm trying ask is this: what would be the Lee equivalent of the KR 1.5? When I use a polarizer on a wide angle lens I can't afford to put another screw-in filter on without risking...
I am wondering what the components of some of my warming filters are. I use a Lee 81 + CC05 red combo and the B+W KR 1.5 a lot with Velvia and though I know the difference in their effects, I still...
