I use movement on most photos. Not always necessary, sometimes just because I like to tinker with shots, and try different looks in the gg. I've think I turned my Wisner into a pretzel from time to...
Nice looking camera. I have a Wisner 11x14 with an 8x10 back and consider it a dream come true to use. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
6" Artar is a nice 4x5 lens!
To keep a Packard open: Squeeze the bulb with the hole covered. Uncover the hole, then release the bulb. The shutter should stay open until you squeeze the bulb,...
I have several length Ronars and Artars including a 14". I often use them on my 8x10 at f:45. Beautiful, tack sharp transparencies. I drum scan, and print up to 32x40 with no noticeable loss of image...
Once again, Jim lets us all feel our inadequacies!:D
This is a question I would answer differently at different times. However, today I'm going to say a 1700 (or longer) Artar would be just fine...
We hyper both tmax and fuji for piggyback shots. A light 4x5 (orbit) works good on a Meade, but an larger, heavier 8x10 is going to push the gearing system, and slow the rotation. Tech pan was...
I agree, I turned down a free copy camera this past spring. The thing was hardly used with some parts still in their original packaging. I just got the lens, someone else took the lights and bellows,...
If you not working too far from your car, you could use a collapsible 8x8 canopy for directed shade. They sent up in a minute, can be moved easily, and can keep all your gear (and you) a little...
Jim, a fire safe is a good idea, I believe my lens cabinet is fire rated at about 10 seconds. While I don't have your talent for collecting such treasures, I probably should protect what I own.

If you think LF lenses are expensive now, just wait and see where prices go when the economy picks up.
I'd love to in a position to buy now, and get the several lenses that are on my wish list....
Great info, thanks!
lol You guys need to quit beating yourselves up!
Forgetting to put the dark slide back in before I flipped the holder was my all time classic. It's an interesting view, flipping the holder and seeing your freshly exposed film!
If you're shooting b&w, you can use a filter to work with the sky, again ask A.A in "The Negative" Those first two books should be your L.F. Bibles until you get back into the swing of things. Also a...
I think the Zone System is what you are looking for. You can search here for info on using it. There are also several good books explaining The Zone System including Ansel Adams' "The Negative". He...
I've never met a rear movement that wasn't useful. It adds a little extra weight, but that does not compare to getting a shot exactly how you want it.
Really lousy my memory is,
So detailed notes I write and write.
F-stop, factors and all the biz,
I put it down and keep it tight,
Three pages worth, so fast, it's a wiz.
Sometimes, when the...
I stand corrected, thanks, Bob! Your right, I should have said incorrectly installed gg...
I think this is actually common problem for shutters. Repairing shutters on your own can be quite a project if you don't know what you're doing. There are several places you could send the lens for...
Hi Josh,
Film doesn't usually move or warp within a 4x5 holder. This is more of a concern for larger films.
Are you using a very thin, off brand film?
Is the holder old, and worn down wood?...
The image in your ground glass will not be as bright without the fresnell, but I think focusing is easier with out it. Try just the gg first, and add the fresnell if you think you need it.
Beautiful Gandolfi, absolutely beautiful.
Received mine today.
Some real nice images and good article by Sandy King. The whole plate article has some beautiful stuff, including some forum members work. I can't wait to read the "Three...
I don't see an abandoned truck, I see a truck hiding in some grass and trees. The second shot is reminds me of a model directed to become part of the background setting. "Almost ghost like" is a...
A 4x5 Wisner technical field would give you both axis and base tilt on the front standard. You can find decent used ones for a pretty good price these days.
Thanks Jim, that's cool!
I'm sure I have something in the shop to use as replacement spacer sleeves.
I've haven't been into soft focus before, but after hanging out here this past few months,...
Happy Birthday to both of you!:)
Thanks Robert,
Yeah, I did a double take when I saw the bellows too. The design looks old, but it has a plastic lens cap, so I don't know the age. Beseler's tag lists serial number, but no mfg...
I just bought an old opaque projector and I'm curious about this lens. It's 22" focal length, 4 1/2" dia x 6" long. It's a three element design. It cleaned up nicely, a little haze, but not much,...
You really captured the power....sweet!
Nad45,
I like that shot, nice curves! A yellow filter would have reduced the atmosphere haze, but I like the dreamy effect without it.
I hope you find your phone.
I agree about getting a cart. I have a large roll around suitcase for my 11x14 gear. It works great.
I have a lab develop, then I scan and print.
Packard bulb works great for me.
I like the "eyes closed" trick. I'll try that.
A stripper might be embarrassed and nervous in front of all those church goers. I wouldn't want to upset the girl!
Maybe I could get the Bishop...
Ralph, yeah it could be a wicked first step!
Jim,
As always, your shots are an inspiration!
I'm trying to recreate the shot from 100 years ago as close as I can. The hill was graded...
That's a good idea, but may not be practical for this shot. I really need to get the camera out there and try a few things. I think I'll bring my a ladder with me just to try it.
Thx!
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind! My shoulder is acting up so I had to postpone the shot for a bit. I hope to get the camera out there soon for the dry run, and shots of just the building without the...
