You can also help things out by adding a second internal drive. Set it as your scratch disk. I have a 80 gig drive in my computer that is used only as a scratch disk. It helps things out a lot.

You could try opening the same scan twice in Adobe Camera Raw. Process one for the high lights and one for the shadows.. The combine them back together in photoshop.

I run into the same problem Sometimes if I open it in PS and then say do a minimal crop and save it it then opens in ACR. Other times I just rescan and it opens in ACR.
