    Re: PMK and Shanghai?

I agree with the plan to use gloves. Also, be sure to agitate frequently and violently. I agitate very violently every 15 seconds.

I haven't shot LF Shanghai yet, but I've done some 120 in PMK...
  2. Re: Ansel Adams on the future fo photograpghy

Knowing what I've learned about Ansel Adams, I have no doubt he would have tried digital photography (probably both in capture and post-processing). Whether he would have decided he preferred it to...

    Re: PMK availability in Canada

I ordered my first batch from Photographer's Formulary. Even with shipping it wasn't too ridiculous.

The last batch, I just got the bulk chemicals and made it up myself.

    PMK is terrific stuff,...

    Re: how old are we?

42 today. Started with a hand-me-down 126 camera from my mother, and not done yet. Most recent purchase: a Shen Hao 4x5.

Re: How would you photograph this scene?

And take some black and white film also. That scene would be terrific in the right light in monochrome. :)
  7. Re: Advice Needed: 4x5 or 8x10

Note that a 150mm lens on 4x5 will be much less wide than a 150mm on 8x10. You probably want a 300mm lens on 8x10 to keep the same angle of view.

If you're not experienced with large format, 4x5...

    Re: JD photochem Canada closing

    Thanks again Bob.
  9. Re: noobie, two questions, cambo and medium format

Remember that if you use 120 instead of 4x5, you'll need a shorter focal length to get the same wide angle of view. A 90mm lens is pretty wide with 4x5 film, but isn't at all wide on 6x7 cm...

Thanks Bob. I'll talk to them.

For smaller amounts of chemicals (e.g. hydroquinone), is it practical to just drop in while I'm in town?

    Re: JD photochem Canada closing

Does Nymoc do mail order? I see they don't seem to have a website.

Re: New to 4x5 and this amazing forum

That would be pretty impressive. I'm at 3, although I told the wife I'd sell the two clunkers when I got the Shen Hao. Still, there's a temptation to get an 8x10...

    Re: Problems with ADOX

I seem to recall that presoaking is discouraged with this film. I'd recommend trying a roll without a presoak at all and see if that solves your problem.

    Re: Carrying dark slides

"Dark slides" seems to be a common phrase in the UK for what I call film holders. It's natural that you'd call them that, even though to us on this side of the Atlantic it means something else.

    Re: Which B&W film?....I can't decide.

    Ken makes some good points.

That having been said, I recommend you give Ilford FP4 Plus a try. Here's why I recommend it:

    - it's a very forgiving film and tolerant in the darkroom
    - it has...

    Now I'm committed.

I ordered myself a shiny new Shen Hao HZX 4x5-IIA yesterday.

I had bought myself a nice 4x5 system with a few decent lenses (from 90 to 210mm) but the cameras were annoying to use. It was really...

    Re: Pyro and Glycin

I buy 100 grams of glycin and make 9 litres of Ansco 130 stock solution. That uses 99 grams. The stock solution keeps two years with good storage, and I can use it up within that span easily.

    Re: 4x5, PMK problems...

I've used PMK for 35mm and 120/220 for almost a decade and I have good luck with it. The key is frequent agitation, every 15 seconds for 2-3 seconds and the agitation must be violent and abrupt.

    Re: Quebec City/Gaspe

If you do the city, be sure to do a day trip to nearby Île d'Orléans, which I found to be a great photographic destination when I visited Québec City in 2000.

  33. Re: Extremely expired color film-- worth my time?

C41 film a few years old, and well stored, can be worth playing with, but I think this will likely be a tremendous waste of time.

  34. Re: About to purchase my first Mac. Please advise.

Re: Recommendations to buy 4x5 in UK?

Fomapan is a nice film. It's grainier than other films of its speed, but this is not much of an issue at this size. I like the tonality (I develop it simply in ID-11/D-76 1:1; I finally developed a...
