    Re: Large Format Landscapes

The key is to resize your image to a desired 1:1 level at something that's big but not too huge to fit within average monitors. Then, assuming the result is a bit soft and not already sharp, give...

    Re: Large Format Landscapes

Luc's mountain shots are what I like to call Crispy Creams - images with a nice amount of screen-friendly sharpening and creamy grey tonality at the same time. I can't find anything not to like,...
  3. Re: Unusual grain pattern, like styrofoam or brains?

That's a good idea Jim. In my case it was probably was the wash water that was the temperature variable, everything else was just sitting in bottles in the room.
  4. Re: Unusual grain pattern, like styrofoam or brains?

Oh well, then um, yeah I was trying to achieve this reticulation effect! A photographic achievement on my part for sure! Hooray me! :p

No, but seriously - thanks for all the replies! I will...
  5. Re: Unusual grain pattern, like styrofoam or brains?

I did measure the temperature of the developer, but guessing about what the number was now. It seems odd that it would be different than the other chemicals, but maybe it was.
  6. Unusual grain pattern, like styrofoam or brains?

I'm wondering what might be going on here with the grain. The film is Tri-X, developer is Ilford Perceptol, I'm guessing the temperature was about 75ºF. plain water stop bath, old-ish jug of...

Thanks Ed, no problem at all - I appreciate your comments. Yeah, there's always so many ways to approach the tones in a photo and still have it look balanced. With skies the general trend seems to...

  10. Re: Lack of portrait skill that even Photoshop could not save

Of course Henry, retouching was not the original question, it was how to shoot it better next time. Thanks everyone for your help! :)
  11. Re: Lack of portrait skill that even Photoshop could not save

Yep, I would like to reshoot it of course. The existing negs are probably salvageable, but I would like to do it right the first time. The focus is so annoying, you just can't see it until you...
  12. Re: Lack of portrait skill that even Photoshop could not save

Just to clarify, the 1st is the finished one which I am pleased with and which has extensive processing. The goal for the 2nd washed out one was to make them similar looking.
  13. Lack of portrait skill that even Photoshop could not save

I was asked to repeat my first American Gothic "cover" portrait of my friends now that the kid is a year old, but this time I kinda missed the boat. For one, although not visible in this shot, is...

    Re: Thoughts about P&S

The problem I quickly found with the digicam-as-meter approach is that the settings don't line up with what you've got on your LF lens. Mine was completely stopped down at ƒ11 whereas my nice glass...

Re: how do you try film?

So far I've found that film kinda sorta doesn't matter. Not that this dissuades me from wanting to try new kinds, but in the end all my photos are made to look how I want them to look and the film...

Well, in the event you're in a hollywood movie and you've just shot the villain. He's not dead yet, you'll have to shoot him again at least once. In slow motion.

  40. Re: 4x5: which design of desktop the most suitable ?

You should first copy the files from DVD to hard disk before opening them in Photoshop. Opening files directly from removable media is generally sluggish.
