I use a battery drill and a paint stirrer made for use in the drill. Not much effort on my part and does a pretty good job. Could use the wife's mixer or blender, but she would probably frown on...
I had emailed Richard Ritter about the rack and pinion and he said they were custom made for Zone VI back in the Vermont period. I was trying to get a piece of the rack for a 4x10 back I had made.

Watch your lighting. Fluorescent lamps can still be glowing after being turned off.
Go for an Anba Ikeda. My first 4x5 folder and I find it easier to deal with than my Zone VI camera. The only drawback maybe the smallish knobs which may be a problem with gloves.

Taking Franks' use of the B&W preview a step further, I started using my POS digital to see the effects each filter had on the scene. I figured this out at Red Rock Canyon when using a red filter...
I used the window blackout material sold by Porters and I think a silk liner. I used 3m 77 spray adhesive to glue them together. (or was it contact cement, I can't remember.) Someone else suggested...
I use a paint stirrer with a battery drill. It works well when I am doing those gallon sized mixes of D76 and Dektol. I think the last one cost me around five bucks. Most of us have a drill lying...
A lot of great ideas here. I use pre printed index cards with the usual info that eventually goes in to the sleeve next to the negative. I do like the idea of notating where you placed an important...
I was lucky enough to see the Ansel Adams exhibit twice at the Bellagio in Las Vegas (don't laugh). My favorite photo is still the Georgia O'Keefe and Orville Cox one. Seeing what real black tones...
"That's an old fashioned camera, isn't it?" asked a pretty lady looking over my Zone Vi 4x5.
"Sort of." I replied "Its about 20 years old I think."
"You'd look a lot better if you had period...
4x5 ( Anba Ikeda, Zone VI, and the home brew), 8x10 (Dorff and Wista), 4x10 (home brew Zone VI back), and hopefully 7x17 by the end of the year. I have almost all the parts for my 7x17 project.

I've built a monorail 4x5 and also a 4x10 back for my Zone VI 4x5. I'm really having fun with the 4x10. I also have a 7x17 on deck if ambition strikes me this winter.
I have quite a few projects...
I have gone through carry on xray O'Hare (Chicago) and McCarren (Las Vegas) round trip twice with an unexposed holder. I developed the film and found no additional fogging compared to film that I...
I've had mine (3442) out a couple of times with a 4x10. Solid tripod although the light weight is deceiving. The jury is still out on the ballhead, though not on build, but more of a personal...
I lucked out and found some sleeves for APS panaramic photos. They measure 4 x11 or something like that and fit two to a page. I asked a local shop if they had something for 4x10 and the guy was...
My Zone VI 4x10 is about finished. Took it out for a spin last night and finally got rid of that pesty light leak. Need to saw off the rails as you can see. I'm probably not going longer than a 305...
My only complaint about the 25 sheet box is that it loads 12 1/2 holders. Kind of like the 10 pack of hot dogs and 12 pack of buns. (or is it the other way around?) :D

Went to Vegas about six months ago and had everything xrayed. My 4x5 pictures looked a little fried after development, so I developed an unexposed sheet that went with and one that stayed home....
I took the 4x5 to Vegas a year ago. The negatives didn't look so good so I processed an unused sheet and a sheet that stayed home. It seems a certain photographer needs his exposure meter checked...
When you hit the lottery, go for the new Horseman stereo camera. It is based on the Xpan camera. http://www.horsemanusa.com/3D/index.html

My darkroom gets to the low 50's F in the winter. I have a small heater to keep the buns warm, but the chemistry is in the 50's as well. I started using a small aquarium heater in each of the 3...
Chaquita or Dole? Damn this is harder than I thought.
Eric
My congrats on your showing. It looks like its time to make a little side trip next time I am downtown.
Eric:)
As a longtime beginner, the best advice I've seen was from Fred Picker. He said to basically be able to set up and tear down your camera without thinking. I practiced this one winter during Sunday...
Wow, thats the first time I've seen the Surveyor site. Very nicely done and executed. There are a ton of websites that are out there for ideas on building your own camera. Building a LF camera isn't...
I believe that someone either here on the LF forum or at the APUG forum has posted to a pdf the various settings for a half dozen papers and their approximate contrasts. I have it at the home...
An added tradition to my biannual Las Vegas trip is a visit to the Belagio casino to see the Ansel Adams exhibit at the museum there. I am still amazed by the wonderful work he has done and seeing it...
It's a shame to see the end of a fine line of equipment. I am relatively new to LF, but it seems to me that Fred Picker's legacy will be that he made large format photography more accessable in the...
I finally was able to see his work up close at the Bellagio exhibit (don't laugh) in Las Vegas. Although the lighting tended to glare up a lot of the photos, I was able to really appreciate the...
I have an assortment of used fidelity and lisco and have some that leaked, but most are ok. I did pick up a couple Toyo holders and these are the bee's knees compared to the others as far as fit and...
I was going through Fred Pickers notes this winter as my darkroom drops into the low 50's. He came up with the following times.
Using 68F @ 2 minutes as a base.
60F 3 minutes 28 sec
75F 1...
For lighter reading I like Edward Weston's Daybooks. You really have to search for any technique info, but it sure proves that large format photography isn't really that boring.
Probably one of...
There is always room at the Chateau Bow wow.
My darkroom hits the upper 40's (like right now) in the winter. I don't have enough heat from those small heaters for the room. If I am lucky I get up to the mid 50's. I ended up using an aquarium...
The instructions for my Aletta 4x5 camera recommends using the spring metal from old windshield wiper blades. Although I ended up using a Grafloc back, I did start the back with the spring steel and...
A lot of us use a #90 Wratten filter to preview our shots in black and white. If you are lucky you can find an actual filter in the junk bin at your no longer in business camera store. The Zone vi...
I was always disappointed that the conference was on the wrong coast. I look forward to attending both the show and the shoot at the railroad museum. It will be nice to be able to shoot railway...
We are having unseasonably warm temps (mid 30's) here in Chicago, so I thought I'd go out and shoot. Of course with a brisk wind it was still cold. I started to rush and lost about 4 out of 12 shots...
Just a suggestion out of experience. When you purchase the ends, find the flat ones and not the rounded ones. They won't stand on their own. (no kidding) I made this mistake.
