    Re: "Designing" an exhibition - advice needed

    This is a great question ... a great topic, really, and I don't think any of us is qualified to answer without seeing the work and talking to you at great length about your ideas.

    If there's...
  2. Re: Getting the correct temperature while developing at home?

    I had a darkroom with no water supply and very little climate control. There were a few days a year with temps right in the low 70s when all the chemistry would stay at 68F as if by magic. But most...

    I've used the 3047 for years and liked more than anything else.
    If I were in the market today I'd check out one of these.

    Re: Scan sharpening

    I sharpen at the scan stage, with a different intent than sharpening for output. I'm trying to recover sharpness lost in the scanning, and to start with as high an apparent signal-to-noise ratio as...

    Re: 4x5" and 8x10" - Quality Differences?

    The advantages and disadvantages are exactly what you'd expect with any change in format size. If you don't need to stop down for depth of field (because you're using selective focus or photographing...

    Re: Schneider: new lenses for the new year 2015

    I'm glad I chose not to sell my lenses. They're worth half or less what I paid for them, but it would be just my luck that the price would go through the roof from scarcity right before I decide to...

    Re: Going to New York

    The cops are on a work slowdown right now, so I'd be less worried than ever about someone bugging you about permits. Just use common sense and don't clog any arteries.

    Re: Hiking Boots for Plantar Fasciitis

    Asolo's always made really nice boots. I used to covet my sister's Yukons (I think they still make these). Asolo's lasts never quite fit my feet so I've always had to admire from a distance.

    Re: Todd Papageorge on Robert Adams

    I cringe a little when critics try to dig around inside someone's head, but Mr. P. at least doesn't pile it on too terribly thick.

  21. Re: Ok! Setting up a web site. What to do about image security?

    Re: Hiking Boots for Plantar Fasciitis

  27. Re: Ok! Setting up a web site. What to do about image security?

    Truly, the one active thing you can do is register the copyrights of your images (this just allows you to collect greater damages if you sue someone).

    As much as I agree this is a good idea, I'll...
  28. Re: Interesting article: "36 Megapixels vs 67 Velvia"

  29. Re: Writing Advice for Photographers from Jorg Colberg

    I didn't suggest we can't interact with a single piece of art. I'm saying that a single work of small scale is almost never enough to articulate a complete vision (or explore the possibilities of an...
  30. Re: Writing Advice for Photographers from Jorg Colberg

    That's easy. The answer is always No.

    Whenever we have the illusion that a piece stands on it's own, it's because we have enough background and context to understand it. This includes familiarity...

    Re: Unsharpening an image

    Re: Peter Lik deserves our skepticism

    My take: if Lik staged this sale, it is problematic because

    1) it means he's dishonest;

    2) His dishonesty served to create false value, and therefore fleece his potential customers;

    3) he...

  39. Re: Writing Advice for Photographers from Jorg Colberg

    Absolutely. I think a big part of the backlash against writing comes from the assumption that writing has to explain. I can't stand it when artists try to explain their work.

    But they can use...
  40. Re: Writing Advice for Photographers from Jorg Colberg
