Friends,
It's been a while since my last post - I have been busy! When you get a chance, check out my newly published book, The Neutron’s Long Shadow: Legacies of Nuclear Explosives Production in...
If you can manage a side trip to Big Bend National Park, I doubt that you will regret it.
Have fun, Martin
About a year ago I decided that the expense and film logistics of 8x10 was not sustainable, especially as I was getting more into color. I started experimenting with multi-row mosaic photography...
Here's a previous thread with many good ideas:

I use the slide sorter function of MS PowerPoint. It is a bit cumbersome placing an image on every page. There may a way to automate this step, but I haven't taken time to find out. After using...
Let's not forget our own Tim Atherton's Muse-ings, http://www.photo-muse.blogspot.com/
No tripod head or light meter?
Not cheap, but I've found these tutorials get me productive much faster than learning from a book. You might still want a book for broader coverage of the details although you can generally learn...
Laumont in nyc is a great place but I'm pretty sure they are not a Diasec licensee. They do provide face mounting to acrylic. For Fuji Crystal Archive paper they do a Diasec-like process with...
The influence of Minimalism.
I consider that a large component of my work is documentary. I mostly use 8x10.
The collectors of Gursky, Struth, Hoefer, Burtynsky, et al. apparently think there's nothing wrong with photographic realism, and they are even willing to pay top dollar to get them.
Try www.universityproducts.com and search on labels, laser to get archival quality self-adhesive label paper. You can easily custom design your own COA in any word processing program.
Martin,
Take a look at Chris Jordan's 2003-2005 work (www.chrisjordan.com). Chris used to post quite a lot on this forum before he moved on to a more conceptual bent. Also check out my site.
Good question, Pat. When I shot 4x5 only, I used to put the N dev films in a dedicated, recycled film box marked N, N+ films in an N+ box, and so on. When I switched to 8x10, I quickly learned of...
Thanks for your thoughts, folks. Seems like face mounting is not a good option with the fiber-based papers. I sure like the intense blacks and low differential gloss of the Harman paper, but the...
Thanks, Adrian. I found Chris' post.
Face mounting is the use of a transparent adhesive film to bond the face of a print to acrylic glazing. This is used mainly to mount large prints for display. It seems to work well for RC papers...
Anyone know if there are any issues with face mounting Harman Gloss FB Al?

Naturally there is some overlap in the listings.
Tim, I'm referring primarily to the single-individual portraits. It is very clear that the quality of light is different for the figure and its background. I don't know how he made his images, but...
Paul, I was hoping to get away with a quick, humorous (even ironic) reply to Claudio's comment, however, this thread actually could be the stimulus for a more extended discussion of intent and...
Long live irony!
Handling large prints by yourself is difficult at best, but here is what I have done for prints up to 40x50". Cut 1/8" plex and Sintra (expanded PVC) to size and trim print to same dimensions....
Thanks for the eyewitness testimonial, Matt. After I received word of the acceptance for that show, I became aware that in the original prospectus they had requested no photos! Evidently, Irving...
For a pretty good survey of the contemporary scene, I try Charlotte Cotton's The Photograph as Contemporary Art. Also, Jonathan Green's A Critical History of American Photography is excellent over...
I think that "Photographic Modernism" has to be understood as just another expression of Modernism itself. Modernism was the belief in and a seeking to express the reality behind appearance, the...
If you do not feel good about 20-25, then show only 15-20. More wall space around each picture gives more value to each image, a good thing. Small galleries often expect you to frame the works...
What a great story! Thanks for sharing it.
Happy Holidays!
I may be using the wrong terminology in saying "key". I no longer have the manuals to look it up for you. The documentation with my 9800 refers to the "bolt and bracket" used to lock the carriage...
I wouldn't want to take responsibility for your situation, but I sold a 7600 and a 9600, locked the heads with the key, did NOT drain the inks. My buyers reported no problems after transporting the...
Paul, "After Invisible Man" is intended by Wall to illustrate a scene from Ralph Ellison's novel, Invisible Man. I won't argue that is "mere" illustration. I think it is an immensely imaginative...
Thanks, Brian, for bringing up an important aspect to this discussion. I read recently on some blog that at the last Paris Photo Show Yossi Milo had sold all of the new works by Loretta Lux before...
Eric, Peter said that he liked your work and could see you at 8PM tonight. After that he's tied up. Hope you can make it.
I was at a bookstore last night and saw the MOMA exhibition catalogue for the current Wall show. In Peter Galassi's accompanying essay he made the point that Wall's career has been characterized by...
Notwithstanding the unseemliness of all the mudslinging, there is an underling point to the disagreement. I have had the experience of acquiring a taste for art that I did not at first grasp, so I...
Ok, I suppose I invited the rants with my thread title, but I am interested in serious discussion of the piece. All I found so far is the following excerpt of an article (full article at...
Anyone care to make a stab at helping me understand the artistic concept behind Jeff Wall's light-box image "Just Washed" which just sold at auction for $120,000?
