Looking at the website, they print at 200dpi as opposed to the lambda max of 400dpi. Unless I'm missing something, I'd look elsewhere for fine art quality. Maybe someone could help me out and explain...
9x12 (4x5) in Barcelona is 2.06 euros ( http://www.24x30.com/pg3ing.htm#diapo )
Tim, I'd check the UK. Ffordes had one for 800gbp - its gone now, but they've a 6x9 with 3 lenses and monofinder at around the 2.5k mark
Jorge, He really isn't well represented on the web apart from his older work. He's obsessive about his prints. he's bought up a lot of the old stock of the kodak dye transfer print materials so he...
I'm afraid I'm one of those who thinks AAs work is technically perfect, but in the main, boring. I'm aware that this is a minority opinion on this forum and the only reason I say this is that I think...
Actually Adrian, he hasn't used a leica for a while. His last published 'new' work was a project in Japan and he used fuji 6x9 for that, his graceland book was a mamiya RZ. He's also shot stuff with...
Robert, I have an epson 1680 and it is not up to the job of getting decent negs for exhibition. The optics are soft. Comparing a 1680 scan with a s/h polaroid 5x4 film scanner and they are a world...
Hi Hugh, I'll say the opposite to what a lot of folk here seem to be saying. I recently had the choice of either going 5x4 with an epson or microtek flatbed, or staying with MF and scanning with the...
Thanks for the post Shane. What makes art great is how many ways people find to express themselves. I'm not a crystal archiva fan either, I dislike the lack of DmAx, but Ultrachromes on Ilford...
One of the things coming out of this thread is that we all have different preferences, thank God! A couple of points from Shane's excellent post - finding a process that excites you is a wondeful...
I was with Chris at Photoespaña, and yeah, I was blown away. I saw a lot of prints and compared all kind of ctype, ciba, digi this, digi that. Chris's prints are out of this world. he gets a drum...
Hi Ernie, I've just been doing some side by side tests of the latest epson flatbeds, microtek, imacon, microtek 120 (this was all with 120 film)minolta multiscan pro. I rented each one and spent a...
A flatbed scanner will not get the results you want. Its the equivalent of trying to enlarge using a plastic enlarging lens. I met Chris Jordan this weekend and saw his work. He shoots 8x10, drum...
CRT monitors fade over time, so I'd check any second hand models with something like the optical puck to make sure you can get it up to spec
See you in Madrid Chris... http://www.phedigital.com/

Tim, I've tried that stuff but leaving brush strokes is a problem. the best way I found is to use a wire-wound rod to get a smooth print. For some larger prints I borrowed the use of a device from an...
Scanners fall prey to specmanship, you really should ignore all numbers and get some scans done. What is often forgotten is the sharpness of the optics, the ability to hold the film flat, and the dof...
Slobodan Nimitrov has been using a graphic for years to do press work, usually with polaroid pos/neg http://www.laweekly.com/ink/01/07/8th.php
It has economic reasons too. Galleries find it easier to find 12 commercial clients for the big prints than 60 private buyers
I spent a copuple of weeks trying to nail this and gave up. I was trying to contact print 6x6 BW negs to 20x16. They were drum scanned, outputted on pict. film from a 7600 using UC inks. They were...
Neil, I could be totally wrong about this, but talking to an epson rep recently he said that the 4000 head and droplet tech is the same as the 7600 and 9600. The new 'R' series printers have a...
I used two for many many years. One with a coldcathode head and one with an ilford multigrade head. They are built like a tank, come in wall or floor or bench model. Focussing controls are on the...
Neil, premium glossy is a crap paper. The best 'gloss' type paper I've used has been the epson premium semi matte. As Tim mentioned, the Ilford papers are better too as they take the ink into the...
i agree whole heartedly Jan. We need to find a description that identifies as clearly as possible what goes down on the paper. Unfortunately 'carbon pigment' is the main component of high quality...
The other name being used a lot is 'archival pigment quadtones' which is what I use for BW. I resent using a trade name as a descriptor, so for colour I use 'archival high-load pigments'. There is...
"Giclee implies Iris to me, and I don't mind seeing it that way. When Ultrachrome prints are called "giclee," that seems pretentious to me (aside from the fact that many consider Ultrachrome to be...
I've used Piezo since it came out and there has been a lot of thought about what to call the darn things. 'Inkjet prints' don't do it any more than 'enlarger prints' would do it for silver. Inks...
Tim, one went on ebay about three-four weeks ago for 1000usd
He's got a two-year waiting list!
bronzing is caused by too much ink being layed down for a given density. i.e. the paper can't absorb the ink. It is a problem with glossy papers. A rip allows you to linearise the inks, i.e. you set...
It depends if you want a photo-type paper or a fine art (matte) paper. Photo papers to try are the epson premier semi matte, or premier gloss, or the ilford 'classic' papers. Fine art I like the...
Jim, I've been working on using inkjet negs for contact printing. The problem is I have found it impossible to get rid of a faint 'dither' pattern which in turn shows on the print. I've also found it...
Thanks Will, in my MF work I never use anything longer than a 80mm, in 35mm never more than 50, and in 5x4 never more than 150.BUT I'd like to focus down to 1m. All compromises isn't it?
Sidney, thanks for the maths! I really need to learn some of the technicalities
I'm talking to someone about building me a custom 11x14. I'm planning on using only 210 and 480 mm lenses with it for landscape and urban landscape. What is the minimum extension I could get away...
Thanks Christian and Saulius. I've been printing digitally for the last 3 or 4 years and I'm having to relearn my analogue chops. If I could get a digital neg to not show a dither pattern I'd be much...
Brian, I'm embarrassed to admit that I am only using a sheet of glass on a rubber mat exposing by a 150watt bulb - I'm just experimenting to see if I can do this successfully. I'm checking out ebay...
Can someone give me some tips on dodging and burning for contact printing? I'm getting halos and all sorts of horrible sloppy things. I'm finding this way harder than using an enlarger - should I?
The creo2 is nice Tim. You can get a wet mounting station with a spare platten. About 12k euros http://www.creo.com/global/products/scanning_systems/color_scanners/iqsmart/iqsmart2/default
