    For what it's worth, I made up a 800mm rail for my cambo 8x10 legend out of maple. I machined the profile (which you don't have to do) on my table saw. much lighter than the ally one and very stiff.

    for what it's worth i use 4mm black perspex to make lens boards for my 8x10 and 4x5 cameras and find that it's easy to machine and strong enough to support my heaviest lenses...

    its very simple :
    if you want to take l/f pictures take only one camera (the 4x5)
    if you also want to shoot m/f or 35mm don't take the 4x5
    if you want to shoot digi leave all else at home
