Re: Selective focus in camera ...is it a thing of the past?
certainly what i am looking for on my current project would be a ludicous proposition for me to do post processing, using a 5x4 and current lenses the out of focus bits look better and better the more you increace the print size and it's so simple.
incidently my digital camera seems to have rather less dof that the film ones, but as has been mentioned, digital post processing "out of focus" has to be done well and that means you have to be an expert or pay someone who is.

Wikipedia has a decent article about Computational Photography, including numerous links to research papers and articles.

I was first exposed to it at the SIGGRAPH 2005 conference, at a course entitled "Computational Photography". The course has been taught at the conference every year since then, as it is a growing research topic.

Adobe has been dabbling in the field:

Finally, a book is in preparation, and can be pre-ordered through amazon. However, it has been on pre-order for a long time...

Some subdisciplines of computational photography are already in widespread use, such as high dynamic range photography and image-stitching. The more exotic areas, like non-traditional optical and camera designs are still mostly in the research phase.

YEs, but would you have the same trill as looking through the ground glass what the P&S can do?
I was just thinking today about this.
Could we call selective focus as a visual ADD?

You are right and I was only joking in any case. It's worth the price to just look at the mess on the ground glass and think about the possibilities.
