He meant that the guy looks tough, self-assured, in charge. And, yeah, I like the picture too. :)

:)
I like it as well.
I'm not sure what's meant to be the focal point: the hand alone, the hand and the left eye, or the left eye.
Would have preferred either, not both.
Interesting tilt with focal plane... generally I like it.

I'm sorry, Miguel,
I sometimes forget our slang isn't universal. As the others suggested, I really like the photo because the subject looks tough, and self possessed. I like the way the focus is broken up between his hand and one eye; it seems to underline the message, for me. Very interesting work.Sorry for being so cryptic.
Lovely!Quote:

I guess this is an environmental portrait.

I am really enjoying these threads, and have one question:
Are these images supposed to be made in September? Or can I post for your consideration a shot from earlier?
They are supposed to be taken in the month that is the subject title, probably with the intent of showing your recent work. I think there's a thread for most, if not all of the months though. Search the titles for the month that you likely shot the portrait. Or just post a portrait and don't tell, I doubt that you will be banished from the forums if you're found out.

Same, just a test, not a final, I'll probably burn the right top and lighten the bottom.

Here's what happens when you....
a) tell a 5-year old to sit still while he's playing a computer game, and...
b) expose the CombiPlan tank to light without attaching the lower hose connector.
(I didn't have a *great* day)

Frank, I do appreciate your pics, I wonder if I can ask you about this one, what light you put in front of the subjects? I would like to change my portrait shooting way, and I'm looking around.
If you want see my portraitures go to my site in the signature. Thanks.

Excellent, this would stand out in normal film too:
Surprised to see the light so far from the subject.Quote:

gsinico/Gelatina: I just use a broad Halogen flood directly on her face and bounce a second one off the ceiling. I get just enough illumination to safely shoot wide open on ISO 400 TXP. I my case I use Lowel Tota-lites but Arris or others would work just as well. These lights get hot and make everyone sweat, their pupils open up, it feels painful and intense just to shoot with them in the Summertime.
Frank, I moved a light-source to make a picture. Actually it was a half closure.
Almost every rule in the book was broken in the making of this portrait:
1) Preflashed 8"X10" paper negatives: "You're supposed to use sheet film."
2) Tonal range: "Blue sensitive only, shows blemishes too easily."
3) The Fujinon 240mm Xerox process lens was wide open at F/4.5. The lens design precludes using external aperture stops, due to severe vignetting, hence it has to be used wide open. Still, it's pretty sharp; almost too sharp for flattering portraits. "That's a found lens, not a camera lens."
4) 4 second exposure ("...one elephant, two elephants..."): "Not conducive for sharp images or good exposures, especially with people pictures."
5) Homemade nested box camera: "Come on, get serious, spend a few dollars and buy a real camera."
6) $25 hardware store halogen lighting: "Cheap skate, penny pincher."
7) The victim: "You're not putting that on the Internet, are you?"
Oh well.

Very nice Bob! :) :)
unrealalex:
I really like the subtle tones in this. What kind of light source is that? I usually only use available light, but need to find a simple lighting setup for portraits.
