First French Large Format Conference & Exhibition in Nîmes, France next June 4 and 5, 2004.
Dear Large Format friends
[pre]
It is a pleasure to announce the first Large Format Conference &
Exhibition in Nîmes, south of France next June, Friday 4 and Saturday
June 5, 2004.
For those who will travel to Western Europe next June, welcome to the
conference. Nîmes is located not far from Arles, a well-known
photographic "mecca" in France (even Ansel Adams visited Arles,
invited by Lartigue !!). Nîmes can be reached easily by motorway and
high speed train from Paris, Lyons and Marseilles. Major French
airports are Paris seconded by Nice on the riviera ; closest large
domestic airport to Nîmes is Montpellier. Travel time to Nîmes by
high-speed train (TGV) from Paris are : 2 hours to Lyons plus 1h30
from Lyons to Nîmes ; direct TGV from Paris to Nîmes in only 3 hours.
The conference is organized by Henri Peyre
(http://www.galerie-photo.com) professor of photography at the Nîmes
School of Fine Arts. The conference is hosted by the Nîmes School of
fine Arts, admission is FREE. Language will be... French ;-);-) but
many contributors do speak English fluently.
On Friday June 4, 7 conferences on LF photography plus one workshop on
panoramic photography. On Saturday June 6, hands-on various view
camera models plus a pinhole workshop. Acces to conferences is free
and unrestricted, however the number of attendants to the practical
pinhole worshop is strictly limited to 10.
An overview of the program :
on Friday 4, conferences by Henri Peyre, Henri Gaud, Emmanuel Bigler
will try to convince you of the interest of large format,
high-resolution photography. So since you are already convinced, you
can skip this ;-) Marc Genevrier, Arnaud Frich and Yvon Haze will
address the question of fine digital prints in all aspects,
resolution, color calibration, and fine digital print from large
format film. Chrsitian Nze will close the series of conferences with
alternative fine print processes (e.g. platinum, palladium etc..)
On Friday 4 evening a panorama photography workshop will be conducted
by Arnaud Frich.
On Saturday 6, pinhole workshop by Robert Colognoni ; exhibition of
large format prints either silver-halide or digital, informal
gathering and hands-on view cameras as well as panorama cameras.
Nîmes has a rich Roman heritage including a Roman Circus and one of
the most well preserved Roman Temple, the Square House. Participants
to the hands-on sessions will be invited to pratical photo sessions
dowtown Nîmes.
[/pre]
Looking forward to meeting you in Nîmes June 4 and 5 2004 !

Monsier Bigler,
It's "this June"!!! ("next June" by convention usually means June 2005).

"Monsier Bigler, It's "this June"!!! ("next June" by convention usually means June 2005)."
well - it depends on where your conventions are from - where I come from next June would mean the next one coming up (i.e. 2004) - this "next June" meaning 2005 in this context used to confuse the heck out of me when I first came to N America...! (people would say on Friday something was "next Sunday" meaning 9 days time or whatever, when I thought it meant two days time - what they meant was what I would refer to as on "Sunday week" :-) )

Tim you're a fellow Brit !!

Tim - if you think you had difficulties, I wonder what on Earth the poor N. Americanos made of your references to "Sunday week"... ;-)
Good luck with the conference Emmanuel.
Cheers,

Sounds like a grand opportunity-- I hope it is a success! While I'm stuck in Fresno CA for the forseeable future, I'd certainly like the opportunity to attend some time in the future. Good Luck Emmanuel!

Sorry for 'next' this is an (incorrect) word-to-word translation of 'juin prochain'. So the 1st French LF conference will be held this june, Friday 4 and Saturday 5 i.e. next month ;-)
This reminds me another common mistake in German : "meet together at 6:30" is 'halb-sieben', not 'halb-sechs' ;-);-)

though not incorrect if you are English :-)

Or if you are English - "half six" (I've also confused a good few Americans with that as well - one actually though I meant three o'clock....!)
First French Large Format Conference & Exhibition in Nīmes, France next June 4 and 5, 2004
<HTML>Just a few words about this conference held on June 5 and 6, 2004 : we had about 40 people attending the conference in the Nīmes School of Fine Arts, not counting visitors to the companion exhibition.
Besides traditional-style lectures, we had a pinhole workshop, a panoramic workshop, an informal display of various LF cameras and equipment. The French HELIOS group
www.photo-helios.org
made an interesting presentation of more than a dozen of comparative B&W printing techniques from platinum to heliography in side-to-side comparison with inkjet techniques, all from the same original subject.
The companion exhibition demonstrated various printing techniques from MF/LF original images, either traditional or digital/inkjet, plus some visual examples of specific capabilities of large format camera movements ; upon special request from enthusiastic visitors, the exhibition will be re-displayed in other countries, an unexpected, good surprise to the organizers.
NEXT ;-) MF/LF French conference is scheduled in 2006 ; a small group of enthusiasts federated by www.galerie-photo.com has already started to work on it.
