Funny. This must only pertains to an official group permit, where they apparently don't want a bunch of people standing around blocking trails with tripods or other clutter like reflectors. Individuals use tripods in Zion all the time.

So don't set up on a trail?

Come on! You should NEVER block ANY trail ANYWHERE with ANYTHING -- including yourself -- at ANYTIME!!!

That's how I interpret it--don't block trails. Common sense.

Some of those trails are quite narrow. I remember hiking to the rim once with a huge pack full of Sinar too wide for even me to fit on the trail across a sandstone ledge. So I actually had to hang onto the cable from the other side, going hand by hand overhanging about 600 ft of air. I was used to that kind of thing back then. What didn't amuse me was getting chewed out by a group tour leader for stationing a tripod at the terminus of a wide paved popular trail. My reply: I was here first. You can wait.

What a mature response.

Do you try to crowd in line? So who was being rude?

I'll be the artist-in-residence in Zion this April...you'll see me and my tripods all over the place!

My guess is that you are intelligent enough NOT to put your tripod in the middle of a trail, telling people "I was here first". BEST of luck. What an opportunity!
