Running out of film then, so I started shooting half sheets of 4x5. This one was shot with a 6.5" projection petzval wide open (about f3.5), and a cardboard shutter. Not sure why it is so grainy, but I was developing in closets with home-brewed D23, and the scope for mistakes was large. Focus is on her shoulder instead of her face, but I kind of like it anyway.
And here is my wife, again with the half sheet and same set-up.

Well, I think I know the problem. I'm 53. Today I was messing about with my camera and grabbed my wife's reading glasses and all of a sudden the ground glass was much brighter and focused! My guess is that in both cases I focused on what I could see best, although I always try for the eyes. In future it seems I'll have to wear glasses...
By the way, what is chemical focus?
chemical focus is what you get when you drink....
sort of like beer goggles
actually it's what the film "sees"...it has different spectral sensitivity than the eye does...usually for most peeps

Some early lenses focus only one wave length of light, which may differ from what the film recognizes. Some people suggest this is why Margaret Cameron's portraits were not quite in focus. Although her response was: who is to say what correct focus is. Such lenses had a small adjustment made after ideal visual focus had been achieved.
Interesting. And I think Margaret was right. My portraits are not out of focus, it was all intentional. And I don't need glasses! My wife calls it denial, but I insist it's art...

I am really not much of a portrait photographer, but I'm trying more these days, so critiques very welcome. This is a portrait of a good friend (we are both flutists). Taken with an 1897 Gundlach 8x10, Nikkor 300-M @ f/16, on Fuji Super HR-T green-sensitive x-ray film and toned in PS:

Hey Corran I think that looks good. The pose/composition work well. How bout opening that bad boy up a few stops? :D
Thanks! I'm still fighting fine focusing with extremely narrow DOF, so I didn't want to risk it. I need to get a new ground glass, the 100-year-old one just isn't cutting it!!

Great Sean. How did you trip the shutter?
Not strictly new, but rather newly rediscovered in a box of older 4x5 negs. My wonderful younger daughter some 24 years ago. More of a snapshot than a portrait, but I still love it (and her). I well remember shooting this with a terrific old Korona with a really nice Velostigmat.
Sean-
That shot immediately reminded me of Ned Ryerson from Groundhog's Day.
Self-portrait time. For a class I'm doing.
My girlfriend assisted me. I taught her how to focus and trip the shutter. Normally she just helps me schlep stuff :D

I forgot to mention that this was modeled after Feininger's famous The Photojournalist. I unfortunately was not that creative. See attached.
I've run out of portraits that I have permission to display. Here is my best portrait ever. A famous Italian still-life photographer, waring her dark-cloth.
Here's my girl in her bedroom at her parents. Everything has been left untouched. Light was very difficult. I will try to take this again.
