a "must see" exhibition in Toronto

this is the most extensive exhibition of well known LF photographers I have every encountered in Toronto

it is a must see if you love photography
closes March 10th

an excerpt from the description

"Embracing both pictures and documents, this exhibition ranges from Henry Fox Talbot to Eugene Atget, from Robert Frank to Ian Wallace and beyond, including particular emphasis on a handful of select modern photographers such as Bill Brandt, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, André Kertész, Man Ray, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and John Vanderpant."

there are also several Edward Weston prints included (and Steichen, and Strand and Evans....). I could go on and on about the various images I have read about and now had the chance to see in person such as Strand's "Blind"....

If you are anywhere in range, this is better than anything I have seen in my lifetime. Newhall's first History of Photography exhibit must have been like this.

bugger won't be going down until April ... looks like a great exhibition ...

This is one of the best shows I have seen in Canada. If you can get to it, it is well worth it. Take your camera, the buildings on campus are great, and they dont mind a tripod.

I am reviving this thread in case people want to get a second chance to see this exhibit. Apparently it will be shown at the AGO in 2015 ( not 2014 !).

The Art Gallery of Ontario has acquired a collection of 268 historical photographs from Toronto’s Ann and Harry Malcolmson, among the foremost collectors of historical photography in the country.

The acquisition was made possible both through a donation of works from longtime AGO donors the Malcolmsons and a private cash donation.

The Malcolmsons’ collection, which includes such names as Eugène Atget, André Kertész, Edward Weston, Man Ray, Aleksandr Rodchenko and Canadian John Vanderpant, was the subject of a substantial exhibition at the University of Toronto Art Centre in January 2012.

The works acquired by the AGO will go on display next June until January 2015.

I saw this while it was on at the UofT. Stunning. an original Pencil of Nature, a Gustav le Grey waxed negative and positive and onwards.

to date I have not seen a catalog
usually it is museums that publish catalogs of their major exhibitions
now that this collection is in the hands of the AGO and they are planning an exhibition
the odds of a catalog being published have just gone up….
they have done some very nice catalogs in the past like the Sudek exhibition last year
