Re: post alternative techniques
Sly, the truck does show some signs of using a very low dilution of sensitizer. Best as I can figure, when one gets down to around 1% or lower, a sort or resiprocity failure takes place. There just is not enough dichromate and UV light interacting in the highlights to give any tone. As a result, no gelatin in the highlights gets hardened -- that is what looks to be happening along the top of the truck (and perhaps one of the headlights).
That is my present working theory, anyway.

PS...How you determine your sensitizing solutions is up to you! What ever works, is my motto!
Re: post alternative techniques
Thats an interesting theory Vaughn. A good solution would be to increase the contrast of tissue by adding more ink to the glop, which would allow you to use more dichromate/less contrast. Its amazing the negatives you can print with high enough contrast tissue.
Re: post alternative techniques
True, David. It is easy to get "trapped" by the raised relief that carbon can have, but my early carbon prints were made with a high pigment content that gave me beautiful prints from "normal" contrast negatives -- just no relief.
The lower pigment content one needs for raised relief requires a negative with a much higher density range -- 2.0 or higher works nicely. So I have approached carbon printing by using the minimum amount of pigment, high sensitizer strengths and negatives made just for those parameters.
If for some reason I do not get enough contrast/DR on a negative, I make a platinum print from it! LOL!

Re: post alternative techniques
I'm using B&S tissue. Was just having too hard a time trying to learn to pour tissue, sensitize, expose, mate, and develop. Now if I could retire and just do photography, I might have time to get to all the things I'd like to master.........if I live to 110!:D

When you're alone
And life is making you lonely,
You can always go downtown
When you got worries,
All the noises and hurry
Seems to help, I know, downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you loose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares and
go
Downtown, things will be great when you're
Downtown, no finer place for sure,
Downtown, everythings waiting for you...
From Downtown recorded by Petula Clark in 1964.
Printed as a Van Dyke.
