adding a Graflok back to a 4x5 camera that doesn't
Hi--
I have an Osaka/Tachihara 4x5 field camera -- lovely little piece of work -- whose only fault is that it does not have a Graflock back. Is it possible to buy one and mount it in place of the camera's current back? If so, where? How?
--Thanks in advance.

Graflok backs show up on eBay quite regularly and are sometimes available from dealers. If your present back is larger than 7 1/4" square, any competent woodworker can make up an adapter frame to mate the Graflok back to your camera.
If you intend to use the Polaroid 545 series holders, notice that you will need to have the Graflok back spaced back from the adapter so as to provide clearance for the 545.

I agree with Ernest's suggestion. I just built a monorail and instead of building the film holder , I just bought a Crown Graphic and scavenged the back . I also have and Anba Ikeda and my next project is to adapt the graflok to that. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, the hardest part would be to match the finish ;>).

Eric, I'm sure you are right about matching the finish being the hardest part of the job. I just didn't worry about it. In doing it right, though, getting the most appropriate wood would be a good start. You can find strips of a vriety of woods in a wide range of thicknesses at www.micromark.com. I used these for the whole job and found the differing thicknesses to be a great convenience.
