Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
Who are your go to suppliers for metal frames and Westminster cotton boards?
Any experience with "Archival Methods"?
Moderators: I could not find a good fit to place this question so followed a few other posts with framing and mounting questions.
Feel free to move to a different category.
Thanks to All.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
I've been using Archival Methods for mat board and some other things and American Frame for Nielsen frames for a number of years.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
I have had nothing but good experiences with Archival Methods. In particular, their shipping practices are stellar. Everything is very carefully packed so there is almost no chance of damage in transit. Same goes for American Frame.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
Thank you Keith & Faberryman, your replies are greatly appreciated.
I have finally run out of supplies and it is time to reorder.

If you buy in quantity, you get a nice discount and save on shipping.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
I live out in the sticks so everything is done by delivery for me. I use pictureframe.com for my frames, and have for over 30 years (previously known as graphikdimensions). They have done a good job and corrected the few errors quickly.
Also, I've had to switch to ordering mat board from Dick Blick in Chicago, as my supplier in Seattle will no longer ship. I hate the idea of my matboards bouncing in their package all the way from Chicago, but I hate driving into Seattle even more. Blick has done a pretty good job of packaging, I think.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
+1 for Archival Methods and their attention to detail in packaging their shipments so that items arrive undamaged.
To John Olsen - consider Archival Methods for shipments of mat board. My experience is that they wrap and package their shipments such that there is NO chance of damage by UPS. ....

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
In about every area there is a wholesaler for materials that the local framing shops buy discount... Ask the local shops, they will probably tell you of of the firm in one of the closest principal cities... The wholesalers might sell to the public if you buy the minimum purchase (often just $25), quantity, and the big one, if you have a resale # for taxes, but you can sidestep that if you insist on paying them sales taxes with your purchase...
Our local supplier is Valley Framing & Moulding in Burbank, CA and have the best supplies and even classes for framers... (Great bulk prices and selection!!!) Framers, galleries, and museums buy from them... But they will bug you about a resale # until you insist on paying sales tax... (Seems that everyone who buys from them insists on resale (no taxes), so they bug you about the # until you pay tax...)

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
In the past I ordered 4-ply Archival Methods mat board through B&H where it was much cheaper than from Archival Methods direct. Then I switched to 32x40 4 and 8-ply Rising board which I order from Blick in Chicago. The first order came without corner protectors so some of the corners arrived bent. For subsequent orders I added the special instructions to add corner protectors which they do and place those instructions on the shipping carton. The boards now arrive with minimal damage to the corners. I'm also a fan of the black Nielsen metal frames which I buy at a local Blick store and museum grade acrylic from a local Taps plastics store where I get a discount.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
Rising museum board, and foam core, from Blick...Frames from American Frame. Generally good service so far. First shipment from Archival Methods (large museum case) destroyed by UPS - but replaced in a hurry and was perfect.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
I have also had good experience with Archival Methods. Good selection of materials and very good packaging. I have also had very good experience with Contemporary Frame Company for frames.

I second this recommendation. I too am close to Valley Moulding and love being able to purchase from them. If you have a similar supplier in your area, you get to see the board in person. You can have a print with you and put it up against the different shades of white to make your selection. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. They have the other supplies you need too.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
Before selecting mat board, i got samples from Archival Methods, Strathmore, Neilsen Bainbridge, and my local art supply store so I could pick a couple of mat boards to standardize on with confidence. You would be surprised how broad a range the term "white" covers.

Thanks, they don't use the same supplier, but I ought to try them next time. I bookmarked the catalog page for next month.

Where in Europe? As mentioned, local framers can get you mat board and frames. In Germany, Monochrom sells mat boards by mail order (https://monochrom.com/praesentieren/...artoutkartons/), I am sure there are others.
+1 for Archival Methods in the US.

My go-to place has been Light Impressions http://www.lightimpressionsdirect.com/

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
Has Light Impressions recovered from their doldrums? They went from terrific to awful at the drop of a hat.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
Jerry, Is Seattle area I buy from Jayness Moulding in Seattle. They deliver locally. I am on Camano Island so there is a small fee. Recently I bought a box of Cresent matte board, Neilsen frames, and uv glass. They were quick and everything was correct.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
I have some white 4x5 cardboard Blair mounts that I can sell you. I bought them from Inkjet Arts in Salt Lake city about 15 years back thinking that I would get a Noblux 4x5 projector which I never could find. You can see pictures of the Blair 4x5 mount in this thread: http://www.largeformatphotography.in...sing-with-D-11
If interested send me a PM. I have 100 to 200 of them.

Just got my second shipment from Frame Destinations today -- well packed. Thankfully, since Fed-Ex threw the two packages over my 6 foot fence. Landed on the dirt/grass -- the frames and glass are all fine (twenty 5"x5" frames and four 5"x12" frames. Wood.)

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
+1 for frame destinations. They have done several big projects (and smaller ones) for me over the years. Top quality, fast service and extremely well packed. Good folks to do business with.

Re: Frame and Mat Board Suppliers
I use both American Frame and Frame Destinations. Since they offer the same products at the same prices, I order from the one that is running a sale or offering free shipping. They are both dependable.
