Re: Minimizing enlarger upgrade cost
Well, the problem is that 8x10 film is 4 times as expensive, not to mention that cheap 8x10 cameras are still really expensive.

Not if you're using X-ray film, around $0.10 per sheet.
Do a search on the forum for X-ray processing and other related information.
Re: Minimizing enlarger upgrade cost
The deadbread link above is a good path to go as a simple conversion. Lamp housing couldn't be more simple. If you wanted to, you could just replace the Beseler head with your 4X5 camera all you really need is three parallel planes.
If you don't want variable contrast in the head, just use white LEDs
I don't know if a 4X5 Beseler head could be adapted to the 23C frame.
I've read that Sinar also had an enlarger conversion available.

I imagined that since I wouldn't have to adjust height (maybe just a fine-tuning adjustment for focus) I could make it pretty lightweight. Unfortunately, I don't know much about optics and the idea never evolved.
...Unless someone else would like to chime in with some support for this idea...?
Get a 60mm WA and it covers up to 67cm while almost giving the same print size from 35mm.

Not to mention that 8x10 contacts are just beautiful (if the photographer does his part)
Just sayin'
