Sand blasting is certainly not good, but 'media blasting' is okay. There are very many different materials that work for aluminum. Choose a reputable service or two. I'm with Rod - anodize it.
DIY home painting is a royal pain. I've done lot, and there's too much to it to discuss in a little DIY. It's dissertation material. :)

Thanks for the suggestions. Anodising seems appealing. Was sort of contemplating that, having worked with anodised and blued alloys and steels of various kinds. Paint only occurred to me as it seemed more "authentic". Though the newer stands seem to be anodised rather than painted. Will see about someone to do this for me. The process is a little arduous at home. In the meantime other suggestions are most welcome :)
