I would like to use a Metz 45CL series (potatoe masher style) flash on my 4X5 camera for hand-held candids. The configuration in the catalogue suggests that the flash must be mounted on the left side of the camera. Can the bottom bracket on the handle mount of the flash be reversed permitting the flash to be attached on the RIGHT side of the camera?

Henry, The answer is yes. You release the bottom camera bracket. Inside is a large slot head machine screw. Unscrew this all the way, then flip the D-shaped flash bracket over. It takes less than a minute. Makes a wonderful flash with a Crown Graphic.
Jim - after that, if you mount it on the left side anyway, will you have flash backs? ;-)
I'm not sure about those flashbacks Ralph is referring to but if the flash is on the left you can shuffle the Grafmatic or change film holders a lot faster while holding the flash with your left hand or with your hand under the left camera strap. But then you may have other ideas.

I now know that I have the option of putting the flash on either side of my Linhof Technika.
As Weegee said: "f8 and be there".
One more tip - if you have a technika, mount it on the tipod socket on the bed, then you get some clearance for your hand and the anatomical grip. I use mine that way and it works great. Just turn the back so that you put the holders in the rangefinder side.
