Best 8x10 Carrier Set-Up for Microtek 1800f
Evan said "...... I slide the bottom of the neg under the edge of the frame ...." that could be wroking against you for two reasons: 1) you might be ever so slightly buckling the film and 2) all flatbed scanners have a 'sweeet spot' that is the resolution, etc. is better in the center. With the 1800f that sweet spot covers msot all of the 8x10 area but you are still better off centering your material. Oh yeah also 3) of two <grin> the narrow open area in the bottom of the frame/glass holder is the scanner's 'control area' and if you are intruding on that area in any way it will have a negative effect on your scans. BTW I have never had any Newton Rings issues with any sort of film scanneded on the glass (usually 5x7).

just a follow-up question...
for those using tape or some other adhesive to keep the film flat, how do you clean the glass of the carrier?
thanks!

Hello Frank,
I for one have advocated using anti-newton ring glass from Focal Point in all of my scanning. They can cut you a custom piece of glass that works with the 8x10 holder and easily allows it to slide back into place. This keeps the item sandwhiched completely flat and thus eliminates any problems with scanning. Tape, sprays, and other methods are also good options. With mine I also use some kami fluid with it to enhance the scan, but all are great options with the 1800f.

"windex and a lint free cloth."
Windex leaves a residue. I use a 30% solution of alchohol mixed with reverse osmosis filtered water and tissues from an organic food store (they have no perfumes or lotions which also will leave residue).

I asked John Van Stelten at Focal Point (in Colorado, they recoat and polish lenses) about Anti-Newton glass and he was perplexed, saying he never sold it. Is there another Focal Point company?
Reverse osmosis filtered water - nice to have if you live in mining country, or anyplace with well water and farm run-off. But I really can't imagine the contaminants from Windex being an issue with the scanner glass.
For my other flatbeds I use the "diaper wipe" computer screen cleaners - cheap, fast, easy and they seem to do a fine job.

Its not the contaminants. Who cares about that. It is the fact that this stuff leaves a residue that is hard to get completely off as do regular tissues etc. because of the perfumes and crap they put in them. If you use what I recommend which is readily available in health food stores and in any bottled water you start out with additive free materials that leave no residues of any kind and it is far cheaper than windex. A few bucks and you have a lifetime supply.
