Thank you for that link and further info Eric! I have been chronically underexposing chromes but I'm getting better, and starting to use GND's more, by necessity obviously.

How do you achieve the black background, and still manage to keep the flowers white
Raffay, thanks for the kind words.
I afix a black cloth hanging bellow the windowsill, put the flower either on the floor or on a small chair in front of the black cloth. I prepare my shots when there is no direct light through the window, for these shots I prefer diffused light. Also, I try to measure and filter such that the flowers are in zone VI+0.5 or sometimes even zone VII, and use a filter (if needed) to bring the background to zone III or less.
I hope that's clear enough

Jiri, I see that you are using a Xenar 210, just curious if you happen to have a 240 mm Xenar, also is your lens has a compound v shutter?
Raffay, my Xenar 210mm f:4.5 is a rather old lens (single coated) and is in a compound shutter. And no, I don't have a 240mm Xenar...

Some Japanese Magnolias I cut from my yard. Provia 100F QL, 210mm Symmar-S, f/18, Calumet Travelite @ full power, with fill card:

And since I took this with my D800E as a "digital polaroid," here is a little comparison in detail between it (and a 55mm Micro lens) with the Provia. D800E has been up-rezzed to match the 4x5 scan (80mp). Full 100% crop will be put on my blog in a few minutes:

Taken on a perhaps bit too old Kodak Portra - that's the reason for the funky colours.
