Are any of you giving it away?
Today I received an email from a blogger at BusinessWeek.com requesting use of one of my images found on my website. I replied with a fair market usage fee. He replied, "Nah, we have to go with free stuff given the current environment."
I told him, "I understand. Given the current environment, I can't afford to let it go for free."
How often do y'all receive these requests for free images? Are any of you giving the milk away?

Re: Are any of you giving it away?
BusinessWeek.com! Cheap SOBs.
In answer to your question... I guess my work's not good enough... No one ever calls me :)
Re: Are any of you giving it away?
I suppose he writes for free for Business Week?
What kind of business publication has an completely unbusinesslike method of acquiring its content?
What gall.
Re: Are any of you giving it away?
Yeah, it's all crap the way everyone wants photography for free.
I wonder if McGraw-Hill gets free rent in Rockefeller Plaza? Perhaps they don't have to pay for internet service 'cause they are Business Week?
Re: Are any of you giving it away?
The problem is that there are hundreds of thousands of folks running around with the latest, greates DSLR snapping fourty frames a minute who would be thrilled to have their stuff published - for free.
Re: Are any of you giving it away?
a lot of big-wig commercial clients want free images ( royalty free stock ) as well
not just the websites ...
on the up side, at least the guy wrote you and didn't harvest your work, thinking it was orphaned (on your website ...) ...

You're absolutely right, and I thanked him in my first email for taking the time to ask before posting.

Irony: 1

I'm usually happy to give away limited usage rights for personal pages and some other no-profit ventures I support, but for businesses--especially ones with recognizable names? No way.
Re: Are any of you giving it away?
I've only given away a couple of images but they were to a college paper (A random phone call asking to use my images.) and the other person was a friend of a friend who needed a quick favor. Both images were digital.
One could say I give away the digital work I do for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams I work for because I don't get any cash, but they do hook me up with a LOT of perks. Free? No. Actual cash money? No. A lot of cool things like all access passes, team clothing, all the food I can eat, etc? Yes.

Re: Are any of you giving it away?
I was asked for images by Variety, the entertainment daily...they wanted them for free. I refused...
Also, by an Italian architecture magazine...again, I refused.
I was asking $350...
