Eurygon f4.5/360mm + Packard shutter?
Hi,
I've got an Rodenstock Eurygon Anastigmat 1 f4.5/360mm (from 1915) and I'd like to use it for portraits.
Unfortunately I don't have a suitable camera yet - but I try to figure out what is recommended.
The print should be at least 8x10 (contact printing) and if suitable I'd like to dive into paper negatives.
The lens is 100mm in diameter (exit pupil of rear lens is 88mm at full open). The SINAR shutter has only an inner opening of 75mmm - it doesn't fit.
I was told that the only option is to do the exposure manually like 100 years before.
I figured out that a Packard shutter (maybe #6 ?) is still produced but expensive (especially shipping to Germany).
Would you recommend a Packard shutter or do you advice to use the lens cap method for portraits?
thank you in advance,
Oliver

Re: Eurygon f4.5/360mm + Packard shutter?
Lens element size of this Rodenstock 300mm f4.5 Eurygon (think this is a Tessar) would be similar to the Schneider 360mm f4.5 Xenar which is about 80mm. Or 360mm / f4.5 = 80mm.
Have used the 360mm f4.5 Xenar with the Sinar shutter with zero issues. Sinar shutter opening clears the rear element.

Re: Eurygon f4.5/360mm + Packard shutter?
The Rodenstock Eurygon is a Triplet lens.
The opening of the SINAR shutter is 76mm, e.g. it is 10mm smaller in diameter than the Eurygon. Wouldn't the SINAR shutter cause vigentting in this case?

Not enough to matter. Used the Sinar shutter with a 480mm f4.5 Xenar which has a rear element MUCH larger than the opening on the Sinar shutter. works ok. Think of an adjustable compendium shade that cuts off the light path where not wanted, except this is at the lens exit ray path instead of the lens entrance ray path.

Re: Eurygon f4.5/360mm + Packard shutter?
Hmmm, okay - your advice is to use the SINAR shutter instead of the Packard shutter because the timing is more exact.
The smaller SINAR would act like a second aperture. Wouldn't this mean that less light will be reach the film, so underexposing it?
Re: Eurygon f4.5/360mm + Packard shutter?
No, numeric aperture for 360mm f4.5 = 80mm or very close to the opening of the Sinar shutter. Look carefully at the actual light area exiting the 360mm f4.5 Eurygon, the rear element is larger (about 100mm) but the actual active light area is smaller, about 80mm due to an internal circular insert.

The SINAR Copal shutter has in the inenr opening a small (2-3mm) plastic ring. Did you remove it in order the increase the inner opening diameter?

No.

Did you mount the lens on a SINAR board or did you use an adapter directly screwed into the SINAR Copal shutter?
Re: Eurygon f4.5/360mm + Packard shutter?
Sinar shutter is NOT designed to have lenses mounted or attached to the shutter body directly. Have Sinar shutter users done this, yes, does it work_maybe, are there risk to doing this_absolutely, from mounting failure causing the lens to hit the floor and damaged shutter to poor lens to film back alignment and more.
Mount the lens to a lens board as exampled here:
