... Anyone interested in photographs and buildings, or how the two intersect, might have noticed a recent spate of books devoted to the subject. I count at least two dozen, published in the first three years of this decade, devoted to the work of significant architectural photographers, photographic projects for which architecture is the main subject, collections of architectural photographs, or more focused studies of individual architects’ relationship to photography (in this case Le Corbusier and The Power of Photography, the first of three to come out this year addressing the architect’s relationship to the medium). In addition to the recent books, panel discussions have been organized and exhibitions have been mounted—and several more of each is forthcoming. ...

Hey gang,

I'm preparing a lecture for my documentary photography class about portraiture of specific people. I am asking them to narrow down their portraiture a bit and find a narrow group of individuals and try to give the portraits a bit of a theme and direction. Some examples of photographers I will be showing them are:

Lewis Hine
August Sander
Edward S. Curtis
Phil Borges
Don Dudenbostel
Walter Iooss

I'm looking for a broader selection, both historic and contemporary examples of photographers who have done significant bodies of work within a narrow segment of the populace.

This is kind of like you doing my homework for me, but kind of not. I enjoy learning about new photographers and the best way to do that is to ask what other people like.

Thanks for any suggestions!

I am now the owner (passed down through the family from my grandfather) of a photograph by Frank Jay Haynes (the "official" photographer of Yellowstone National Park). However, before today, I new nothing of Haynes or his work. I've spent the day reading up on him in order to find out more about what he did and hopefully about this photograph. He worked primarily in the late 1800's and early 1900's photographing for the Northern Pacific Railroad and Yellowstone National Park. I did find this exact image of Yellowstone Falls on the NPS/Yellowstone database as done by him so I'm assuming it was taken in the late 1800's. Image is a hand colored 11 x 14 silver print. Could be an Albumum print, but I don't know anything about albumum to to tell the difference between it and silver from that era. It isn't signed, but it is stamped on the back and embossed in the corner with the Haynes Studio in St. Paul Minnesota.

One interesting thing is that my grandfather was a professional photographer in Minnesota and would have been practicing in the early 1900's when the Haynes studio was around in St. Paul. I'm wondering if the two of them knew each other or if he knew Frank's son who carried on the family business after Frank died.

Anyone out there know much of anything about Haynes other than the normal history stuff that you can find on the net. It would be nice to find out if this photograph is worth $20 or $1000 (I'm guessing more towards $20).

If anyone is interested, I could attach a photo of it, but I won't be back home for several days.

Earlier today I had to give my son a ride to the gym so he could work out. I don't like the gym. My work out comes from cutting and stacking firewood. I usually wait outside and read. Today I forgot to bring a book, but I remembered seeing an old View camera magazine (Jan/Feb 2006) in the back of my pick up. I read the article called "Vision and Craft" by Ken Lee. The article inspired me then (almost the entire article is highlighted) and reminded me today , that we must clear our minds of all clutter and see the wonderful possibilities right there in front of us, waiting to be photographed.
